The transitional period of a breakup is one filled with self-reflection and personal rediscovery. As humans, we want to make ourselves feel better even though many methods can be counterproductive. Laughter is a foolproof method that is cheap and easy. Breakups are a challenging time in the life of anyone going through it! For me, rom-coms have therapeutic properties in less than 2 hours. Here’s a rom-com movie night arrangement that might just make you feel better!

So, I am a movie loving girl and I pride myself on knowing how to watch a movie. During this breakup, you are going to need a mix of classic and newer movies. You are also going to need a fun, safe, and cozy place to watch a movie. I like to get myself a snack and really transform just watching a movie into a self-care moment.

Alright, now the moment you have all been waiting for, the rom-com movie recommendations:

  1. Someone Great:

This movie has been a favorite of mine for a year or two and it is a great one to help you get over that sadness that comes with a breakup. This movie will make you laugh, cry, and realize some things about yourself. The main character, Jenny, spends the whole movie just trying to run into her ex so that she can fix things with him. By the end of the movie, with the help of her friends, she realizes so much about herself and realizes that she is okay by herself. I think this is such a good reminder that we need to lean on our support system to get us through these times.

  1. Legally Blonde

This movie is the definition of breakup revenge. Getting dumped by her longtime boyfriend inspires her to go to law school where she ends up doing very well. I think college students know how empowering it is to get an education and Elle Woods brings that empowerment to the screen. Watching this movie reminds you how we all can do hard things and look good doing them.

  1. 13 Going on 30

13 Going on 30 is such a fun movie to get you laughing. Like I mentioned before, laughing helps you get through things. I know from first hand experience how much a good laugh means! Jennifer Garner does such a good job in this movie. It is 100% one of my comfort movies. This movie is also great to watch with your girlfriends!

  1. Runaway Bride

Runaway Bride is a classic movie. Nobody knows more about breakups than this bride and she is always on the lookout for Mr. Right. The ending of this movie makes you believe that there is someone out there for you, for everyone. There is a match setup for you! I think watching this movie made me feel lighter and more normal for going through a breakup.

  1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

My favorite rom-com in the world is How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days! It has some of the best laughable moments and the premise of the movie is so funny. This is a good one to watch when you need a laugh. It is a good comfort movie to watch alone with that perfect movie setup that I mentioned earlier!

Reflecting on the themes and lessons in these movies might be exactly what you need after a difficult breakup. There is nothing better than a cozy, at home movie night. I hope this list helped make you feel a little less alone and maybe gave you a good self care night idea. Laughter and self care are some of the most important things after a breakup. Embrace the single life, but when it gets hard, the rom-coms are always there for you.
