My favorite ex-boyfriend, nicknamed ginger (but also known as cop boy, Ed Sheeran, spy kids, #1 [for his place on the roster before us dating], and one of the minions), is my favorite for many reasons. Despite the hurt and anger, I’ve felt after our break-up, he’s still the first one to teach me I deserve more. The first to happily entertain my ideas on pasta-themed cat names and raccoon memes. The first to understand and share my love (obsession) with furniture and grocery stores simply because they’re just so organized and bright. The first to ever call me beautiful. The first to truly understand my anxiety and not shame me for it. The first to follow his words with actions. After everything, we have remained great friends, and our friends constantly remind me why we worked as a couple in the first place. However, let me be clear, he still sucks (sorry, bud).

So, here are 15 songs that describe the run of our relationship.

  1. See Through – The Band Camino
  2. I Think I Like You – The Band Camino
    • One of the first moments I realized I really liked ginger was when we held hands in public for the first time (sounds odd but bear with me here). As someone who’s not a massive fan of PDA and someone who’s felt uncomfortable holding other people’s hands in public before, this was a big moment for me. For some reason it felt natural, it felt nice… it felt right.
  3. Come With Me – Mt. Joy
    • Long Story Short – Taylor Swift
      • When I first listened to this song after we became official, I realized just how much shit I’d been through up to the point I met him and how much better he was. I clung to the nearest lips and got pushed into the depths of hell, but getting back up and becoming the person I became to meet him is something I don’t think I’ll ever regret.
    • I’m Your Wreck – Mt. Joy
      • Thanks for being my wreck and letting me be yours. I know we’re both just too much of a wreck to be together right now.
    • New Year’s Day – Taylor Swift
      • I was prepared to give every midnight, to stay when things got hard, to stay when we were making mistakes. Life just works differently I guess.
    • The Only Exception – Paramore
      • This.
    • Slow Dancing in a Burning Room – John Mayer
      • Disclaimer: I don’t like John Mayer as a person but this song… damn.
    • Block me out – Gracie Abrams
    • Two Slow Dancers – Mitski
    • Unfair – The Neighborhood
      • He pinky promised me in the Sonic drive through he’d never break my heart. He is in fact a liar.
    • i hope ur miserable until ur dead – Nessa Barrett
      • Ok, this is just me being petty.
    • Kill Bill (Acoustic) – SZA
      • I <3 SZA
    • Seven – Rainbow Kitten Surprise
    • Where do we Go Now – Gracie Abrams
      • No seriously, where do we go now?
