Taylor Swift released her long awaited “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” October 27, including five new “From the Vault” songs, which may be her juiciest yet.
As always, fans were quick to speculate what lyrics were about who, but Swift left nothing to speculate on in “Is It Over Now?” where she explores her experience with the difficulty of leaving behind someone you loved. The song is about Harry Styles, and fans already have solid proof that the song is about him, from photographs from when the two were a pair to lyrics on his first album, there is no doubt about who this song is about.
On Tumblr’s “behind the music” website, Swift said that “Is It Over Now?” is a sister song to “Out of the Woods,” which makes perfect sense as soon as you start connecting the dots.
The first verse of the song begins with the line “Once the flight had flown,” which references the matching paper airplane necklaces she and Styles shared, which is also heavily referenced in “Out of the Woods” with the lyric “Two paper airplanes flying.”
Chills went up my arms the first time I listened to the second verse. It begins with the lines “When you lost control/ Red blood, white snow,” referencing the snowmobile accident the couple famously got into, which is also referenced in the bridge of “Out of the Woods.”
The next line of the second verse is “Blue dress on a boat,” referring to photos of Swift after her breakup with Styles. She was seen sitting alone on a boat wearing a blue dress, which fans have just realized is the same blue dress she wore in the “Out of the Woods” music video.
The final line of the second verse is “Your new girl is my clone,” which leads to my favorite piece of evidence that fans have found. It’s no secret that Styles has been with a handful of women, but fans are beginning to realize that many of the women he was seen with following his breakup with Swift had blonde hair and blue eyes, just like Taylor (which she references in the lyric “If she’s got blue eyes, I will surmise that you’ll probably date her”). In Harry Styles’ song “From The Dining Table” on his debut album, he sings “Woke up the girl who looked just like you/ I almost said your name.”
As an avid Taylor Swift and Harry Styles fan, “Is It Over Now?” quickly became my favorite From the Vault song on “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” with “Now That We Don’t Talk” coming in at a close second place. This track is littered with references to Styles, most notably the infamous snowmobile accident of 2012, and I had a blast looking at different theories on Twitter and TikTok.
