College is tough. Between lectures and literature I find myself constantly working to finish the next assignment. And with spring break coming up, getting into that bathing suit is starting to seem more and more important. Not to mention the extra hours I have to pick up in order to afford that trip to Myrtle Beach. But what happens when the universe throws you a curve ball and you have no clue how to hit a home run?
You learn. That’s how. It seems to me that we learn just about everything there is to know about anything during those long and terribly painful classroom lectures, except how to deal with life’s non-expectancies’. But, they are there. They are everywhere. Life is constantly throwing something else at us: one more thing.
For some of us it’s a death of a loved one, the detection of disease, physical abuse, emotional abuse, rape, the ending of a relationship, injury, robbery, the list goes on and on. Life just throws these un-settling events our way and we have no clue how to bounce back.
Â
Believe me, I’ve been there. All 35,000 of us roaming around campus have been there. We’ve all seen someone there. And in this sense we are all connected. Even on a campus this size we are all connected through life’s non- expectancies’. So for those of you, who are going through something difficult right now, know that we understand. We get it. Don’t let it bring you down, allow it to mold you into the person you are suppose to be.
Â
This poem hopes to encourage the bounce back by understanding that life is hard at times. Life sucks at times. Life hurts at times. But we all go through it and someone out there does understand.

“In Between the Clouds,” by Kara Schmieg
Â
It doesn’t seem fair, it doesn’t seem right
To take people in and out of our lives
It hurts when they leave: your sad and alone
Can’t imagine, how to move on
Â
I know it’s for a reason, I’m just not sure why
People come in and out of our lives
We teach each other lessons, we learn as we grow
It hurts so much to let go
Â
I just want to hold you and tell you my friend
Your life is worth living; your purpose lies within
Please don’t give up, so much happiness lies ahead
You have a Life that needs to be lived
Â
The healing is that hurt: it’s scary and it’s strong
But it needs to happen in order to move on
I’ll be here if you need me, as someone who understands
Please allow me to extend my hand
Take it at your own will; I know it will come on your time
But just remember you’re a dear friend of mine
