Flash Mob on Campus: An Act of Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCSU chapter.
At 11:18 on Friday, November 18th, a strange sound could have been heard for those near the SAS building on NCSU’s Main campus. This wasn’t one to invoke alarm, nor was it one lacking of interest. It was a mellow sound that carried with it a funky rhythm and a catchy cord.

It sounded like MGMT’s “Electric Feel.”

Should one have been curious enough to make their way towards the sound, they may have seen quite
an interesting sight: A flash mob, dancing followed by a girl holding up a sign saying to her friend “Will you be my Electric Girl?”

Missed the random festivities? Don’t worry, Her Campus was on the scene and was able to dig up some information and interview some of the people involved in this Hollywood-esque act of love.

Caitlin Cohn, a senior at NCSU, was the one responsible for the whole flash mob. She wanted to use a flash mob to officially ask her close friend Dani Lechner, a junior at NCSU University, if she would like to be her “Electric girl.” Caitlin says that she got the idea after watching a YouTube video of a man proposing to his girlfriend during a flash mob. When asked why Caitlin chose this specific song to ask Dani out, Caitlin mentions that Dani had once said that she wanted to be someone’s “Electric Girl,” so naturally, this song would fit perfectly.

The flash mob danced to the song, “Electric Feel,” with a dance routine choreographed by members of the Just Cuz Crew (JCC), a hip hop dance crew on NCSU’s campus. Her Campus got in touch with one of the lead choreographers, Corinne C., and asked a few questions about the flash mob.

According to Corinne, she was approached by one of the crew’s members and asked if she could
work on some choreography for a friend of his who wanted to ask her friend out through a flash mob.
She was intrigued by the idea, and, with the help of Katherine H. (another member of JCC),
choreographed the dance routine during her free time. Corinne goes on to say that the choreography
was difficult to come up with at first, but after her and Katherine got in touch with the cornier side of
their dancing skills, they got in the groove, and came up with the routine pretty easily.

Dani, the target of the flash mob said that she had no idea about the whole thing and was quite
surprised at first and then completely ecstatic afterwards! Dani goes on to explain her reaction to the
whole situation.

“So this girl, Caitlin Cohn, gets me up this morning and tells me we have a meeting … on campus at
11:15. So we roll up to SAS Hall … when this girl starts playing ‘Electric Feel’ by MGMT really loud on a stereo next to the bench we are sitting on,” Dani said.

“Next thing I know, like 15 people are dancing in unison to this song, Caitlin included. They start pointing at me and dancing toward where I’m sitting, when Caitlin pulls out a sign that says ‘Dani, will you be my electric girl.’ This story ends with me running, half laughing and half crying, and jumping all over her.”

“I mean it was one of those things that are so wonderful and surreal, that you feel yourself floating for
the rest of the day, and every day with Caitlin feels like that.”

The flash mob was definitely quite a special site, and for those that missed it, don’t worry, Her Campus
has you covered! Video of the Flash mob will be up soon! Technical difficulties!
