On Tuesday, February 22nd 2011, ten NCSU male students competed for the chance to win the first ever “Mr. Wolfpack” title, but only one man stole the crown, the crowd, and the show – Mr. Patrick Angle!

Patrick, a senior majoring in international studies who describes himself as “a fun-loving friendly guy who is able to laugh at himself,” decided to compete in the Mr. Wolfpack 2011 Competition because of his roommates encouraging words…“He told me to [compete] so he could laugh at me.”

The roommate wasn’t the only one laughing at Patrick though. The audience roared with laughter and applause during his talent act where he “remade Nessun Dorma by Pavoratti into a sort of funny NCSU song.” Patrick’s goal in his talent act was “definitely to be funny and make fun of myself.” He owned the stage with his bellowing voice, lyrics in hand, and pillow-stuffed fat man costume. A standing ovation crept to the back of the auditorium from the first row, revealing the crowds growing admiration and overwhelming approval of this competitor.

The next segment of the competition was a catwalk of “what you wanted to be when you were younger.” Patrick, the funny man of course, chose Patrick Swayze “just because I love to dance – and it was an excuse to wear tights, something I’ve never really done.” Just imagine short red shorts on this big guy parading around stage, yep, that’s Patrick! A crowd pleaser for sure! He admits that he really wanted to be a veterinarian when he was younger, but tights were too appealing to turn down! “Honestly, I had the most fun dancing around in tights.” Patrick’s personal favorite talent act among the other competitors was Matt Whitley’s saxophone and poem reading, “It was just classy, ya know?”

So what does winning “Mr. Wolfpack 2011” mean? Patrick says he won an incredible resume builder, some extra Wolfpack pride – if that’s even possible, and some new friends. With the title he hopes to be a great example of an NCSU student as he goes around promoting education in Wake County Schools. For the ten competitors, the experience of being in the competition varied, but for Patrick “meeting some awesome guys and letting my close friends have some blackmail material” was the best part of the competition.

Shout out from this first time Mr. Wolfpack 2011: “It was a great experience, and a huge shout out to Hilary for putting in all of that work and making it such a great event! Thanks mom.”
