Freshman Year Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Not many of you know who I am outside of Her Campus. My name is Alexis Hooper and I am a freshman biology student at North Carolina A&T State University. Outside of my academic life I work, spend time with my loved ones, and write poetry. In high school I ran track, participated on student government, and worked a part time job. I felt that life was going to be exactly same minus my parents being there.

Coming to college for me was like being on a bigger stage with competition I’ve never competed against before, except we are all running the same race. I knew a few students here already but I was excited to get involved in anything that would look good on my resume. Although I’ve always been a shy person. Over time I learned that I am here for an education but I should also make the most of my time here. I had heard all the rumors about homecoming, living spaces, and the food. I was shocked that the food wasn’t bad and that homecoming was the opposite of all the negativity. It was actually the most event filled week of my life, from being a part of the residence hall association and the hall decorating contest to the concert and football game.

It was a massive wave of people from the library all the way to the stadium. I loved every minute of it. Seeing people so passionate about their college and Aggie Pride, made me excited for the rest of my journey here. The one thing I learned from GHOE is that it’s best to do all your work ahead of time so you don’t have to work extremely hard to keep your GPA from plummeting after. I didn’t have this issue but it was a big topic of discussion afterward. I sort of overloaded myself with classes but I believe I handled them pretty well. Juggling chemistry and biology at the same time has shown me my strengths and weaknesses. I attended so many events I cannot remember them all, I’m anxious for what’s to come. I feel as if coming to college has helped me get my foot in the door on what’s to come in the real world. I’m more mature and I want different things for myself now. I believe I will grow to be the embodied being of what it means to be “Aggie born and Aggie bread.” I cannot wait until sophomore year.

I am Alexis Hooper, President of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University chapter of Her Campus.
Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
