The Faces of Her Campus: Megan Powell-Rivers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Megan Powell-Rivers is a senior English major with a concentration in creative writing, and a minor in multimedia journalism. Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Megan has always had a passion for writing. At a young age she began writing poems, short stories, and fanfiction. From elementary to high school, English and history has always been Megan’s favorite subjects. She loved learning and talking about literature and historic events that shaped our world today. As a teenager, Megan thought of her passion for writing as a hobby not  a potential career path.

Her freshman year of college, Megan majored in business her first semester and then education the next. Unsatisfied with both, she decided to pursue a degree in English her sophomore year at N.C. A&T.  “The summer [before her sophomore year] I spent a lot of time thinking about the things I’m passionate about and what I wanted to accomplish in my life.”, Megan stated, “I remember watching Scandal one night and thinking ‘I wanna write a show as thrilling as Shonda Rhimes’, and right then and there I declared I would become a screen/tv writer. The next year, I changed my major to English with a concentration in creative writing.”

That school year Megan wrote a screenplay, fiction pieces, and a collection of poems. Along with this, she also joined Her Campus.  “I wrote my first article on how to finesse food from the café. It was a fun piece to write because I knew a lot of students could relate to my struggle. It was a big deal for me. It made me happy  that people read and liked my article.”

Since then, Megan’s interest in journalism grew as she became intrigued with news and [black] culture. “I’m slowly but surely finding my voice through my words, and I have Her Campus to thank for that. With my education and affiliation with Her Campus, I aspire to pursue a career in television writing and journalism.”

Megan currently serves as the secretary of the N.C. A&T Her Campus chapter and the vice president of the N.C. A&T English Honors Society chapter. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies/television, YouTube videos, and writing articles.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is being a failure.

If you were stranded on an island and could only take one item with you, what would it be and why?

This is hard lol. I’m gonna say a lighter so that I can make fires and boil water.

Meek Mill or Drake?

DRAKE ALL DAY EVERYDAY
