As a student at North Carolina A&T and member of a party promotion team, I’d say I know a lot about the party scene. As a freshman, right now I still have a lot to learn but here are some lessons I’ve learned from my nights out.

1. KNOW THE PLAN – If you are a freshman or don’t have a car and want to party off campus, this is especially important. Who are your riding with? Are you going to do any activities beforehand that might affect you later? What’s your emergency plan? Anything can happen between the time you go out and come back so a plan is important.

2. DO NOT GO OUT BROKE – You never know what kind of situation you might get into, so always carry at least the amount you would need for an Uber ride back to your dorm or apartment. Sometimes there might not be an emergency, but you just want money to eat. Either way carry some extra change.

3. WATCH YOUR SURROUNDINGS – Of course it is good to be very concerned about yourself, but it is equally important to pay attention to what is going on around you. Even if you are not under the influence. It’s “girl code” to look out for those who are. One more tip is to take note of the exits. I’ve learned from experience that knowing the exit will save you from wasting time and being confused.

4. RESPECT YOURSELF – I know it is easy to get too hype at a party and forget where you are, but know your worth. You can dance at a party, even be a little more wild than normal, but you don’t have to put on a show. You will get recorded and posted on social media within 24 hours. Before you go the extra mile during Speaker Knockerz “Freak H**” , remember where you are and who is watching.

5. HAVE FUN – Going out is one of the ways you will make memories in college. I encourage everyone to let loose on occasion and do whatever they enjoy. As long as you are safe and responsible there is no telling how much fun you can get into.
