All About Love!: Different Types of Love Covered – Shows and Movies to Binge-on During Your Breaks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nanyang Tech chapter.

Movie and TV show recommendations when you just need that mini break from school and work!

1. Family Love

This show can be found on Netflix:

  • American film: Captain Fantastic

*Warning: some nudity!* An unorthodox family raised in the wilderness. You will soon come to realise that such unconventional parenting produces really bright kids compared to the conventional and conservative way of parenting kids in our urban city life.

A must-watch!

2. Platonic Love

Can be found on Hulu:

  • American TV show: Only Murders in the Building

Featuring stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, three strangers who stay in the same building apartment known as The Arconia are brought together to solve the mysterious death of a man in their building, as a team of goofy and lovable true-crime podcast lovers.

3. School Day Romance and Bromance

This show can be found on Netflix:

  • Anime: Horimiya

A slice of life kind of anime that depicts various high school romances and issues we face as awkward teenagers. A comforting eye-opener as you realise that we all can resonate with these growing pains in one way or another! Bromance is also sprinkled throughout the series as friendships are forged.

4. True love

Can be found on Disney+:

  • MCU TV series: WandaVision

If you are a hardcore Marvel Fan, you will be sure to love this one. Continuing from the aftermath of the heart-wrenching loss of Vision, this series follows Wanda Maximoff’s journey to recreate what she’s lost, eventually rediscovering herself as The Scarlett Witch.

5. Love for non-human other/your pet

Can be found on Netflix:

  • How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

Hiccups and Toothless’ growing friendship and care for one another is one that is truly endearing. It reminds one of adopting a pet from the shelter and the relationship and bonds that form over time after much trust and safety is established.

There is also a good mix of familial love where the show goes on to point out how, sometimes, there’s an advantage in not fitting into tradition — the need for a new catalyst and culture is just what is needed to fix the ongoing dysfunction in a society.
