Manhattanville Frequencies: April’s Mix Tape

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

This month, the playlist has a slower pace, trying to relax myself throughout Spring Break, and the weeks following. Though a lot of these songs are sad songs, it the raw emotions of many of the songs that make them worth it. Hope you enjoy!

Reaper – Sia

My best friend has been going through a bit of a Sia binge lately, so when my other dear friend played me this song, saying they both came up with different meanings for the song, I gave it a listen to, and tried to come up with a meaning myself. What I love about Sia is that she gives a voice to the pain, and the stories she tells through her music often connect with listeners of every demographic. Reaper alone could have many interpretations. Who is the reaper? My friends and I figured it could be a stalker, death, bad luck, or depression, what do you think?

Heaven or Hell – The Morning Of

The Morning Of is another one of those bands i could just keep listening to forever if you let me. Off their album, “The Way I Fell In” the album has three songs you must listen to in a row, the final one being my favorite, ‘Heaven or Hell’. You most definitely should listen to the next three songs in order to get the full feel for the band: I Know You Know, Bring Me Home, and Heaven or Hell. The songs flow into each other perfectly, and the band is from Newburgh, NY which is only about an hour to two hours away from Manhattanville! The band has a jazz pop vibe, and often include trumpet solos, which I personally think makes the band unique.

Hallelujah – Panic! At The Disco

The first single off their new album, “Death of a Bachelor,” Hallelujah is probably one of my favorites. They released the song about a year ago, and I was lucky enough to hear them perform it live last April in Oneonta, and there’s something wonderful about hearing the entire album come together and being able to listen to it in January thinking, “I heard this song live, and knew the album was going to be amazing.”

A Place Near the City – Lydia

Lydia is another amazing band that I’ve been able to see in person. A really close friend, who had been following them for years, showed me their album, “Devil” and then we both anxiously waited for the release of their album “Run Wild” which was released in August of 2015. We saw them last October with a few friends in Albany, and the mood they  cast onto the audience is beautiful. I can’t find the words to explain how awestruck the band the left me after the concert, how relaxed I had was despite the fact that the concert was in a small and crowded venue. While I would recommend seeing them in concert if you ever get a chance, I would also recommend looking up some of their albums as well.  A Place Near the City is off of their album, “Illuminate” from 2008.  Lydia is a band that will always make you feel, which is what good musicians try and do.

7 Year – Lukas Graham

While listening to music and doing homework in my dorm, a friend and I found ourselves listening to a playlist of Sylvia Plath poems. Feeling rather down, something that Plath will always do, my friend recommended this song. “Have you heard 7 Years by Lukas Graham? Cause that is one sad freaking song.” So, I put it on, and fell in love with it. To start Lukas Graham is the name of a Danish Pop-Soul band, Lukas Graham Forchhammer is the lead singer. While I don’t know other songs by the band, the song 7 Years makes me think of 21 Pilots, and I can’t put my tongue on why. It’s a beautiful song about coming of age, getting what you think you want, and hoping you get what you need.

Here’s the rest of April’s Mixtape! Feel free to follow me on Spotify to find my playlists and other music! And let me know what you like, new music is always a must!!
