The leaves are starting to turn, and you’re really starting to miss home.  You’re thinking about your mom’s homemade apple pie, the local bakery’s cider donuts, and your hometown’s fall festival.  So how do you make yourself feel better? You can’t have mom mail her apple pie to you, unless you want it to be a crumbly mess!  Here are some tips for beating the homesick blues this semester.

  1. FaceTime with your family and friends.

Missing your best friend?  FaceTime them! Thanks to technology, we can basically be with someone at any time.  The nice face-to-face time together can really make you feel better; even just the sound of someone from home’s voice can make you feel a little better.  Don’t have an apple product for FaceTiming? Download Skype or Oovvoo, and make your friends and family do the same! That you way you don’t have to miss out on seeing those you miss the most.

    2.    Print out and hang up some pictures.

Take the bus into town, and make up some pictures at CVS or Walgreens, or even go onto Shutterfly! (Shutterfly tends to have amazing deals on prints). Then, once they’re done, hang them up! You can just put some on your desk in frames, or even make a cool collage on your wall! I made a heart on my wall, after finding it on Pinterest!

     3. Go home for the weekend if you can.

If you’re really finding it hard to be on campus without your friends and family, take a weekend and go home if you’re close enough.  Sometimes a weekend home can be a nice reminder that while you miss home, you don’t miss the freedom that college allows you.  It’ll be a nice trip home, where mom and dad will most likely buy you dinner and give you some extra spending money, simply because they’re so happy to see you.

     4. Take a long weekend, and go visit your friend.

If you have a friend that’s a few hour bus or train ride away, spend the money and take Friday up and go visit.  Get a hug, party with them, and eat lunch at their favorite place. Not only will you get to see your best friend for the first time since August, but you’ll get to see the things they talk about, and you’ll understand why they always order pizza from that one place.

5.  Take A Deep Breath.

Take a nice deep breath a remember that Thanksgiving is only a few short months away, and remember that you can make it through.  Right now, it feels like you’re an eternity away from home and close to those you love, but it makes the homecoming that much better.
