Her Conference 2017 – Things Learned and Favorite Parts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

This summer I attended my first Her Conference in New York City! I had such an amazing time and experience, it was hard to believe that it was only two days long. Over the course of those two days, I learned so many things, some that taught me different lessons about life and life after college. On the other hand, I was more confused than ever about what I wanted to do with life after college. Here are a couple things that I learned & some of the best parts!

  1. It is okay to be confused

After leaving Her Conference Saturday and Sunday, I was more confused than ever on what I wanted to do with my life after college. I remember leaving one of the keynote speeches and one of the speakers had said that when she first got her job, it wasn’t what she was expecting and that she ended up leaving and that she ended up leaving there for her current position. I learned that sometimes it takes experience to realize the things that you like and dislike.

  2. Explore different options

When it was time to choose which keynotes I wanted to go to, I only wanted to go to the ones about PR and Marketing because those are what I am going to school for. But when my friend mentioned going to a keynote about Social Media and how it does good in the world, despite my skepticism, I went. Once the keynote was over, it opened my eyes to a whole new world of the impact that Social Media has in the world today. Knowing that there are other options out in the world is a huge blessing because you may not know it but it could be right under your nose.

  3. So many goodies!

Goodies, goodies, goodies galore! On the first day, we got a HUGE bag filled to the rim with a bunch of makeup products, a notebook, workout clothes, coupons, books, etc. The second day we were given an Ulta Beauty bag filled with Bed Head Hair Care (which smell amazing by the way!) All throughout the conference, there were also raffles where you can put your name down for a chance to win HC merch or makeup, jewelry, and so much more!

  4. Fangirling over the keynote speakers is totally normal!

Now, if you are like me and are a HUGE fan of How To Get Away With Murder, then you would have fangirled as much as I did when I found out what Aja Naomi King was going to be the closing keynote at Her Conference. Being in the same room as her was enough for me, but to hear Aja talk and give her input on the issues that are going on today was nice to hear because they are just like you, they have opinions. Aja Naomi King also talked about HTGAWM and how she got the role which was a HUGE plus and gave away little spoilers!

  1. You meet so many different people!

Going to Her Conference allowed me to meet so many different people! It allowed me to make different connections whether it be socially or for the future in getting a job (Networking people!) Everyone was there for the same reason and you were able to connect and bond over the same things! There were many  Her Campus members that came from outside of the Tri-State area and the United States which was very neat to see that Her Campus go outside of the United States. I cannot wait until next year!
