Global Citizen Festival NYC 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

Two hours had passed and we were still waiting in line. We haven’t moved. My friend and I were ready to experience our first ever music festival, the Global Citizen Festival at Central Park in Manhattan, New York. Suddenly, the line starts moving. People are getting excited and pumped. The line starts moving faster and next thing we knew, our tickets were being checked. We’re in.

The park was huge. I mean, what did I expect? We were about to enjoy a concert with 60,000 other people. My friend and I finished entering the park and we were handed some free things, like drawstring bags and eco-friendly hydration pouches. We instantly became obsessed with being here. We waited in hour long lines just for an overpriced T-shirt and a $5 bracelet for each of us.

About an hour passed and the concert was about to begin. The first performance was by Janelle Monae, who in fact, is an amazing artist. Her songs are super upbeat, fun, and all about girl power. After Janelle Monae was finished, Shawn Mendes performed. His songs are fun and it is always a good time to dance with them. Shawn Mendes even did a cover of one of his songs with the one and only John Legend. It was amazing.

Shortly after Shawn performed, it was time for Cardi B to shine. She came out on stage in a vibrant, red outfit and a platinum blonde wig. The crowd went wild while Cardi B performed and her songs definitely put smiles on a lot of faces, including my own. Janet Jackson was next. A ton of people at the concert did not have much knowledge about her, besides her being Michael Jackson’s sister, of course. I knew a few songs by Janet Jackson, so I was excited to watch her performance. I was pretty sure that superstardom runs in the Jackson family.

I was right, too. Janet Jackson’s performance was incredible. She makes superstardom look easy. After Janet Jackson, The Weeknd performed. His performance was the last one of the night. His performance was great and everyone seemed to love it. I’ve always known that his music was great, but it sounds even better live.

After The Weeknd performed, the stage lights turned off. Everything was quiet. People were leaving Central Park. I was upset because I had waited so long for this day and it was finally over. Overall, I did have a great experience. Until next time, Global Citizen’s.
