10 Shows to Binge Watch over Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

Winter break is the perfect time to catch up on TV shows, are start a new one. If you’re anything like me, you have a hard time finding a new show to start when scrolling through Netflix and Hulu, and by the end of the day you’ve spent over an hour looking, and you decided to watch nothing instead.  Well, I’m here to help.  Here are my ten recommendations for TV Shows to start this break, whether or not they’re running still, and where to find them! (They’re in alphabetical order to keep from playing favorites!)

1. Bob’s Burgers

Bob’s Burgers is a fun, light hearted, and short show that’s quick to get through.  I love watching this show when I need a quick pick me up! It follows the life of Bob, his wife Linda, and their three children Louise, Tina, and Gene as they try and keep not only their lives together but their business.

Where to Watch? Hulu

Still Running? Yes, new episodes are on Fox.

2. Bones

This show went on for twelve seasons, and the differences between the characters make you fall in love with them. You learn, grow, and develop with the characters as they need with love, death, and killers.

Where to Watch? Netflix

Still Running? Nope!

3. Broad City

A tale of two kooky best friends living in NYC, follow Ilana and Abbi as they try to live life as well as they can.  Abbey, an aspiring artist currently working as a janitor at a gym lives with her roommate (who’s never around) and her roommate’s boyfriend who is around a little too much.  Ilana works at an advertising firm that she never goes to, and runs the city.

Where to Watch? Hulu

Still Running? Yes, on Comedy Central

4. Criminal Minds

Matthew Grey Gubler is my favorite actor, kooky and fun, and brings it to his role as Doctor Spencer Reid in this Crime Drama. Currently in its twelfth season, follow the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI as they solve serial killer cases in each episode, while discovering more and more about themselves and each other. I loved the relationships built between characters over the season, and always felt a heart string get tugged on when one of the team members were in trouble

Where to find it? Netflix

Still Running? Yup, in the twelfth season on CBS

5. Dexter

Long story short, with minimal spoilers, Dexter is a serial killer of serial killers that works for Miami Metro.  Rescued at a young age, and adopted by his rescuer, Dexter learned to target his urges in very specific places.  Follow Dexter as he solves crime while simultaneously killing off the crime doers, and evading the law himself.

Where to find it? Netflix

Still running? Nope!

6. Jane the Virgin

Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss’ son after a messed up trip to the gynecologist.  This pregnancy puts Jane’s religious morals, marriage, and family at risk of falling apart, but Jane’s positive attitude always brings things back together.

Where to find it? Netflix

Still Running? Yes, it’s on its 4th season no the CW

7. Mind Hunters

A new Netflix original, Mindhunters follows Holden Ford in the 1970s as he looks to delve into the minds of serial killers in order to properly understand them.  Holden, a hostage negotiator, takes a step back from the field after having a negotiation go downhill, and leads him to trying to better understand the criminals instead of ignoring them.

Where to find it? Netflix

Still running? Yes! They were just picked up for a second season

8. Shameless

As a sociology minor, I love the way Shameless is able to depict the struggles that those in lower income areas struggle with.  Fiona Gallagher, the oldest of six children, raises her younger syblings after her crack addicted mother and alcoholic father disappear.  Follow their struggles to pay rent, deal with alcoholism, fight teen pregnancy, self discovery, and trying to hold a job while holding a family together.

Where to find it? Netflix

Still running? Yes, the eighth season is running on Showtime currently

9. Sherlock

Based off of the Sherlock Holmes series, Benedict Cumberbatch plays a snarky, sociopathic, yet charming Sherlock Holmes.  Follow him, Watson, and others like Molly and Mrs. Hudson as they use fine detective skills to solve crime and figure one another out

Where to find? Netflix

Still running? Sadly, Sherlock just finished its final season

10. Stranger Things

If you haven’t heard of Stranger Things, you’re living under a rock.  Stranger Things is the amazing TV show that came out last summer on Netflix.  This show has a nod to 80s movies and shows, and is full of 80s nostalgia.  Not only does it have an amazing group of up and coming kid actors on the show, but it has fan favorite Winona Ryder. When Will, a young boy, goes missing in Hawkins, Indiana, his friends and family are determined to find him, but something supernatural is occurring that makes finding Will harder than they expect.

Where to find? Netflix
