One Year with Her Campus: A Writer’s Perspective

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Murray State chapter.

By this time you probably know that Murray State’s Her Campus chapter has officially been on campus for one year!

As an organization, the chapter has grown and improved. And as a writer for the group, I’ve found a great organization and platform to express myself.

I joined Her Campus just before the chapter’s launch. I’d been looking for opportunities to write and edit, and, although I was already extremely busy, I decided to write for Her Campus. I’m glad I did because joining Her Campus expanded my horizons at Murray and as a writer. While I had met a large portion of English and Creative Writing majors, it turns out I knew very few people in Journalism. Attending weekly meetings, I discovered where the Murray State Newspaper office was located and heard about internship opportunities and clubs that I hadn’t known about. I met people from different backgrounds and have been inspired by some of the projects that members have been working on.

As a writer, my year at Her Campus has helped build my portfolio and helped me gain experience. Prior to writing for Her Campus, my writing process was solitary. Though I’d attended workshops for my creative writing pieces, I didn’t have a writing community. As part of the Her Campus chapter, our weekly meetings are opportunities to pitch article ideas, sometimes inspiring other pitches and stories. From how-to’s to playlists to opinion articles, Her Campus has been a platform for me to share my ideas in conjunction with other writers. Anyone can start a blog, but writing for the chapter provides a community where writers support each other.

Throughout the past year, I’ve been able to share advice and stories about my own experiences. I have been able to open up about things that I’ve learned and provide my perspective on things like high school dress codes. Being able to write about topics that interest me has been a fun opportunity that has enabled me to add interesting articles to my writing portfolio.

While the past year has helped me grow, this next year is going to be even better. Murray State’s chapter is growing, bringing in new members with unique perspectives. The chapter is looking to collaborate with other organizations on campus which will be a great opportunity to meet more people and work on new projects. I also plan to grow as a writer, writing more profiles and helping share other peoples’ stories. Here’s to a happy one year and many more!
