Living On Campus vs. Off Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Murray State chapter.

College is an exciting part of your life. In fact, it’s the thing you countdown to once you graduate from high school! All summer you start to pack and you make a list of things you would like in your dorm room, such as: pictures of friends, your kittens and puppies calendar and fruit roll-ups, oh yes, you can’t forget about the fruit roll-ups. You’re finally able to live on your own and live however you want. Most students, if they pay enough money, will get lucky and have a dorm room all to themselves. They have the luxury of not dealing with a roommate and not knowing how they are going to act.

Living on campus has its ups and downs. It’s nice because you see everyone everywhere you go. In fact, you can’t get away from those people. You think you’re safe when you leave your room, but once you walk around the corner, BAM! There is someone else in your face. Another nice thing about living in the dorm is that you never have to clean the bathroom. It was always a chore at home to clean the toilets and bathtub, but not at college! The only thing you have to worry about it wearing your water shoes to prevent yourself from getting some foot disease. Another thing you’ll have to worry about it keeping your key with you, because if you take a shower and get locked out of your room, you’re doomed. The most embarrassing thing that can happen to you is getting locked out of your room during your shower. No one wants to walk all the way downstairs in the main lobby in a bathrobe just to get the RA to open your door for you.

So, living on campus has its ups and downs, but just wait until you hear about living off campus. Once you find an apartment to live in, then you get the ultimate feeling of freedom. You have the entire apartment to yourself and you can decorate it however you want. Living in an apartment is the best feeling in the world, until you are late on your electric bill, and your water bill. Then you have to deal with dishes being all over the counter and the toilet getting dirty. Sure, living off campus is nice, but you have a lot more responsibility to take care of when you do. If you stay on top of your chores though, it can be really nice having a place by yourself. You can dance around in your underwear singing Celine Dion if that’s what you really want.

So living on campus can be fun, but so can living off campus. Seeing your friends everywhere is great, but so is being able to lounge around in your underwear and not sweat the small stuff. Enjoy every moment of your college experience while you can. Living on campus and then living off campus is just all a part of the experience.
