One of the scariest things in life is not knowing what to expect in any new situation or experience. As college students, unpredictability is something we’re faced with every day. Despite our efforts to make everything as anticipated as possible. For someone who enjoys planning every detail of their daily schedule meticulously, the thought of anything being spontaneous was an unsettling idea. My first year of college was anything but predictable, but that’s what made it one of the best years of my life.
Often, I am approached by students and other friends, who ask me why I joined Her Campus at Muhlenberg. I signed up to join the first interest meeting the spring of my freshman year, knowing the bare minimum of what it really meant to be a writer for an online magazine, to create content that would be published for the entire college campus to read. From attending my first chapter meeting, I quickly understood that Her Campus at Muhlenberg is not just another ordinary college publication, advertising the next sporting event on campus or giving brief overviews on our college’s history. Our Her Campus family consists of strong, talented young women writing about topics that we genuinely have a passion for. Through our articles, we reach out to young men and women in the Muhlenberg community; we write with the intention of making an impact on people, even if it helps just one person. Writing is something that I’ve always been passionate about, but settling into college made it difficult to find a place where I can continue to write about things I was passionate about. Her Campus at Muhlenberg gave me the platform I needed to be heard and the opportunity to write about topics that are important to me.
My experiences with Her Campus have given me opportunities to embrace the idea of unpredictability. Joining Her Campus at Muhlenberg, you get to be apart something much bigger than just another media platform. Opportunities may come along that you might not have been looking for, but Her Campus was the kind of unanticipated opportunity that turned out to be one of the best experiences of my college career thus far. I found something in Her Campus that I never realized I needed, a group of intelligent, supportive young women who genuinely care about and relate to the content that we publish. Since becoming a member of the Her Campus chapter at Muhlenberg, I’ve honored with the responsibility of being this year’s Marketing and Publicity Director, where I get the chance to reach out to other students beyond the computer screen.
