There’s More To Muhlenberg Than The Academics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

Let’s be real, during our search for the right college we all had a certain thing in mind: rigorous academics in our field of choice to prepare us for our future. Whether that is Med school, Law school, Grad school, or the real world, we wanted to have the best education we could possibly get. This is why, during tours, we asked questions about the academia and what the classroom setting is like. We may have sat in on a few classes, and ultimately made the decision to spend our next four years here at Muhlenberg. But one thing you don’t see on the tours is that even though Muhlenberg is known for its academics, people know this school as the school that smiles.

Take a walk down Academic Row, you’ll see at least fifteen people you know and probably six of your best friends, your roommate, and even your favorite professor. They’ll always smile at you, and you’ll always smile back at them. You’ll walk into Seegers behind a huge group of athletes and naturally, one of them will hold the two doors open for you to walk into Seegers too. That’s just Muhlenberg. We’re all smiles and politeness.

I’ve made some of the most amazing friends here at Muhlenberg, and not only that, but I’ve found myself as well.  Some people know exactly what they want to do going into college. I was one of those people, but when that all changed mid-fall semester of my freshman year, I felt like I was on a whirlwind of downward spirals. Being 200 miles away from home, my parents weren’t exactly the people I could talk out my life plans with. This is when I found my best friends, they knew what to say and they could act as parental figures in my wonderful beginning to my college experience. Freshman year was filled with friends and SigEp and the Frisbee house. Little did I know, the people I met in Walz and at those parties would become my best friends, people I don’t know how I lived 18 years without. People that I felt I had known my entire life.

Now, as a junior, things are a lot different. Your friends may decide they want to go abroad, and you have to go through a semester of FaceTime and Facebook messenger just to keep up with their lives while they’re miles and miles away. You constantly message them with the updates on your life and to get the updates on theirs because, realistically, they miss you as much as you miss them. But these people are some of the people you met at SigEp freshman year, or even someone you didn’t know who lived next door to you your sophomore year that you just immediately clicked with.

As for everything else, it’s hard to not have something to do and to not have someone to do it with. You’ve got your wing-people, your best friends, and friends you want to get to know better. You join new clubs every year because your interests change and every weekend there’s always something going on in Seegers to get excited about. From Acappella to dance, to Stuff-a-plush, there’s never a dull night in Seegers, there’s never a dull night with your friends. So whether you want to sit in, drink wine, and watch Netflix, or you want to throw on your cutest outfit and head out to the parties, you definitely have the people to do that with, and the friends that will be by your side forever.

Who would’ve ever thought that as you made the decision to spend four years at Muhlenberg, you’d meet people that you now know will one hundred percent be in your bridal party? Because that’s obviously something we always talk about… Who would’ve thought that you’d be able to study in the light lounge while eating Mac-and-Cheese Tuesday while texting your mom, best friend, and sitting with 8 people gossiping all at the same time?

So Muhlenberg, smile on, hold those doors open, and don’t ever change.
