Sneak Peak at This Summer’s Biggest Releases

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

Two very important trailers have dropped over the past few weeks, and it means excitement for everyone. On March 19th, Disney released the trailer for Toy Story 4. The continuation of the storyline will be sure to thrill those who grew up watching the first three movies. Even more excitement came just a day later with Netflix releasing the first trailer for the third season of Stranger Things. The adventures of everyone’s favorite ragtag group of kids continue, this time in the summer of 1985.

From what we saw in the trailer, a lot has changed since the last season of Stranger Things. The kids are now in their early teens, preparing to take on the tumultuous ride that is high school. From the trailer, we can see that Eleven and Max might finally be friends and that Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship might be explored. The trailer hints at more of a teen summer vibe—a contrast to previous seasons that were set in the colder seasons. The season is set for release on 4th of July instead of around Halloween like season two. The release date may seem odd because fans often associate the show with Halloween, but we can’t forget that the first season was released in the summer—effectively making us long for the cool breeze and crunching leaves of autumn. Everyone is in for a new adventure with Toy Story 4. Bonnie, Woody’s new “kid” after Andy, and her family embark on a road trip, bringing Woody, Buzz, and friends along. It seems that Bonnie created a new toy named Forky, who she crafted from a plastic spork. At one point, Forky runs away, leaving Woody to go after him. On his journey, Woody stumbles into a new type of store. Here, he encounters a new villain taking the form of a spooky porcelain doll, Gabby, voiced by Christina Hendricks.  In this new store he happens to come across an old friend, Little Bo Peep. Bo shows Woody the alluring new world of the carnival, with a tempting amount of new experiences. We see Woody torn between a life with Bonnie and his friends and the new one that Bo has shown him.

There is plenty to look forward to in this new movie, especially all the new characters. But Forky and Gabby Gabby are not the only newbies. A teaser on Toy Story’s official Instagram featured new minor characters named Ducky and Bunny, who are voiced by Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. The movie is set to come out on June 21st this year.

The approaching arrival of another Toy Story movie obviously evokes a lot of emotions for teens and young adults who grew up watching these movies. But Stranger Things, though newer, can evoke the same emotions for other generations. Those who were actually alive during the 80s might be delighted to see the decade come to life again. These two trailers hint at exciting— and perhaps nostalgic—feelings to come for all ages.
