Hurricane Florence: The Storm of a Lifetime

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

Florence is a massive, calamitous East Coast storm, now classified as a category 1 hurricane by the National Weather Service. The storm has continual winds of up to 130 mph, and it is expected to damage whatever comes in its way. Florence is growing stronger by the second and is moving towards Virginia, and North and South Carolina.

The hurricane may drop twenty inches of rain in some areas. Due to a coastal storm surge, flooding from exceptionally heavy rain, and storm-force winds, there is a rising risk of life-threatening effects from Hurricane Florence. North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper,  instructed North Carolinians to expect power shortages for a prolonged period of time. Moreover, an emergency evacuation order was issued in some regions of North Carolina starting Monday, September 10th at noon.

Furthermore, Cooper lifted the normal transportation restrictions for farmers, allowing them to move their crops quickly and efficiently before the storm devastates everything in its path. Additionally, this storm is rendering it increasingly more difficult for low-income families to evacuate their homes. Many of these families must evacuate and drive for over four hours in order to reach relatives or a safe shelter, not knowing when they will be able to return to their homes and work.

Hurricane Florence will be the storm of a lifetime. Please prepare NOW! Make sure to stock up on groceries, water, canned foods, wood, gas and last but not least, generators. The longer you wait, the less food and water supply will be available on supermarket shelves. Finally, spread the word, so that others may protect themselves from Florence’s wrath.
