The first couple I interviewed for this year was Sara Dilly and Brendan Hughes. Sara and Brendan are both sophomores and play on the Women’s and Men’s basketball team. They met freshmen year at a football game and have been happily together ever since. :)
How did you two end up together?
Brendan: Well, I was pretty persistent with my efforts, but it took longer than I expected. I mean, I see this beautiful girl that is so sweet, nice and all I wanted was for her to be my girlfriend.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
Brendan: Her smile for sure!
Sara: You like my smile? Aw. My favorite is definitely his messed up pinky. It sounds weird, but he broke his pinky a few years back and it never healed correctly so it is always bent. I love it haha.
What do you think is the attitude of millennials towards college relationships?
Brendan: Well, we have special relationship so, in general, I would say people are pretty supportive.
Sara: Anytime we walk around holding hands, everyone is always like, “aww” so I think we are cute. Sometimes people are a little harsh, but I always think it is because they are jealous.
How has your relationship changed your attitude towards partying?
Sara: Friday night date night! We don’t go out on Friday because…
Brendan: we want to hang out with each other. Saturdays we hang out with everyone, but usually end up together. Fridays are definitely a no go because I want to hang out with my girl.
Have ever felt pressure to give into college hook-up culture since your relationship began?
Sara: No, definitely a hard no
Brendan: Well, I hope not…
What was the best date you guys went on?
Sara: Oh gosh, there have been way too many.
Brendan: For me, probably our first date. We went to Allentown Brew Works and I asked Sara to be my girlfriend even though I previously asked her (not in the right state of mind though). But, I wooed her with my loving gifts.
Sara: It helped that he brought me cheesecake.
Brendan: Yeah, she was an expensive date, but totally worth it.
How has the summer affected your relationship?
Brendan: I think we got even closer because once you go from seeing someone every day to maybe twice a week, it is pretty hard.
Sara: I would agree with that too. Over the summer, I met most of his family which was amazing. Being away from someone you love, gives you the chance to miss them, even though he is a bad texter.
Brendan: You had to call me out?
Sara: I had to haha. But he would leave me voicemails saying like, “Hey babe, just checking in to see how your day is going. Just letting you know I’m thinking of you.”
What is one piece of advice you have for new college couple?
Sara: Hmmm I would say finish your work during the day so you can watch Netflix together at night. Right now, we are watching breaking bad together so it gives us motivation to get our work done. Oh and date someone that has more GQ money than you because I’m pretty sure that is why Brendon dates me. I buy him pancakes every Sunday morning.
Brendan: Definitely enjoy it. Spend as much time together because four years goes by quickly. AND learn to tie your shoes so your boyfriend doesn’t have to tie them for you.
What are some fun facts about each other?
Sara: I feel so pressured. Fun fact about Brandon Pierce Hughes is that I think he is a little afraid of me because he has to use proper grammar around me or I will call him out. I know a lot of his favorites! Favorite animal is a hippo and favorite color is purple. He has an insane memory! BUT he cheats during a thumb war! I don’t know, he is just the best.
Brendan: Sarah Ann Dilly has a really bad fear of feet so anytime I’m on her bed or around her, I have to wear socks. However, she thinks her feet are perfect. She also has never needed braces so her teeth are perfect. I could go on and on…Fun fact: I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love Sara
Sara and Brendan recently attended a wedding over the weekend and they had quite the story to share with me!
Sara: Well, we went to my cousin’s wedding and up until this point, I didn’t have a boyfriend so,
Brendan: So I knew I had to step up and bring my A game. There was this dance circle at the reception and I channeled my inner Danny Zuko and told myself to go for it. I looked at Sara and she had this look on her face like, “oh my gosh what are you going to do” and then I sprinted and slid on my knees right in the middle of the dance floor, playing the air guitar and everything. I timed it perfectly.
Sara: Afterwards, my aunt came up to me and goes, “Sar, I love you, but I loooove your boyfriend.”
Brendan: End of the day, we are perfect for each other. It she doesn’t get sick of me, I’m pretty sure I’ll be with her for a while.
