Why You Should Love Rainy Days

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

For some, rainy days are a blessing and for others, they make them feel disoriented and yucky. For those who identify with the latter, I can see where you’re coming from: you get wet when you walk outside, it’s cold, it’s dark, and it’s muddy. However, it’s nice to appreciate rainy days sometimes. After all, there are places (cough, California) that simply don’t have rainy days. Here are a few ways you can conquer your rainy day slump and convert them into a rainy day dreams:

1. Crack your window open. Studies have shown that rain is soothing and  calming. If there’s a heavy rain outside, let some fresh air and the sweet rain scent come in, and enjoy a little drizzle.

2. Take a nap. Rainy day indoor naps are probably the best thing ever. The darkness outside is ideal for sleepy time. If you have a big project, or need to study, a perfect study break would be to  take a rainy day nap! It will re-energize you, and refocus you to get it done!

3. Build a blanket and pillow fort. Don’t have enough blankets and pillows? Explore your room, use extra sheets, borrow from some your roommate, and build a super awesome study-safe fort where you can cozy up while studying. You’ll feel like a kid again, and you’ll have a new cozy environment to stay in.

4. Listen to music, pick up a book, and make some tea. Cold? Damp? Bored? This is the perfect solution. Put down that textbook, and pick up your favourite non academic book. It’s a great way to unwind. While you’re at it, make yourself a cup of tea because you deserve it!

5. Jump in puddles. Do you feel cooped up? Don’t think you can’t go outside because it’s rainy! Bundle up, put on your rain boots, and explore the beauty of nature in a pure and cleansing form. Not only will you clear your mind, but you’ll be at peace with your surroundings.

6. Turn on your lights. Hey, you’re paying for the room and board anyway, right? Utilize your lighting, don’t sit in the dark. If you’re missing the sun, don’t forget we have this great thing that is artificial lighting. It’s not the same, I know, but it could help you get over that rainy day gloom.

7. Watch a scary movie (or in my opinion, Harry Potter). Honestly, who doesn’t love a good scary movie on a rainy day? They basically go hand in hand. If it’s thundering even better, but those puffy clouds and mist in the air create the perfect atmosphere to thrill yourself with your favourite movie.

There are a lot of ways to get over a pessimistic attitude towards rainy days. Turn on the light inside of yourself, and take advantage of the change of scenery. Indoor days don’t always have to be gross and negative. There’s always a way to turn a bad situation around! Now, stay inside and enjoy those rainy days to their fullest potential.
