The Top 3 Things You Need to Get Through Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

If you live or go to school in an area that has a cold winter, it can certainly be unpleasant. After living all 18 years of my life in climates that experience “real” winter, I’m still not used to it. However, there are just a few things (other than a good, warm coat) that can make this bitter cold season (that for some reason basically lasts from November to April) a little more bearable.

Wear a cozy (and cute!) winter hat!

Putting on a comfy (not itchy) winter hat can really make all the difference. You’ll go from shivering to being warm and cozy in no time. I used to avoid wearing a winter hat like the plague, but it honestly has made the winter season so much more manageable because you don’t have to deal with your head and ears being super cold, but you can also put together a super cute outfit if you have the right thing, making the winter just a little less unpleasant.

Get thermal shirts to wear on those super cold days!

I absolutely swear by Heattech shirts (though really any thermal shirt will do) because they are extremely thin and fitted so it’s really easy to wear them under any outfit and they do an amazing job keeping me warm. It can be really annoying to have to wear several layers, but a thermal layer is a huge help when it’s below freezing and windy since they keep you super warm and cozy without being bulky or thick so you can also stay comfortable.

Never underestimate the power of a scarf

Wearing a scarf could seem like a no-brainer, but it really does help take the edge off the cold weather. The feeling of your face actually hurting due to how cold and windy it is is one of the more irritating things about winter, so wearing a scarf (or face mask) is crucial to staying cozy! I always wear a scarf (even with my coat zipped all the way to my chin) just to avoid my nose feeling like it’s about to become an icicle.

These are the top three things I do and recommend you do as well to stay warm this winter! If you’re in a cold climate like me, here’s to a fun-filled and (hopefully) cozy season!
