Yesterday, I had vegan sugar cookies.

The ones we had on our first date.

The ones you really like.

I didn’t even want them that bad.

I like the vegan chocolate chip ones better.

I actually only eat the vegan sugar cookies

when there’s nothing else for dessert.

I need the last thing I eat to be a

sweet treat.

So the aftertaste in my mouth is a

sweet treat.

So sometimes I pick a dessert I’m not even such a fan of.

Just so I can still have my

sweet treat.

On our first date, I took you to

my college’s dining hall.

I used a guest swipe.

They were serving brunch, they had

the egg and cheese on an English muffin

that I texted you about the week before.

Of course you had to try them.

Eyeing the dessert stand, I noticed

the vegan sugar cookies.

I said you should try them.

They’re actually good.

You said you’d give them

a chance.

We passed through the hashbrowns and

you asked if you could take two,

because you didn’t wanna take the

food away from us MHC students.

You were always such a

sweet treat.

I gave you

three hashbrowns.

We sat on a circle table,

directly next to each other.

The egg yolk from my sandwich is

dripping down my chin and I’m

pretty sure I looked a little gross,

but you just laughed and pointed out

the mess YOU were making.

What a sweet treat.

Now, we haven’t spoken in

quite some time.

I think of that first date

as I bite into the sugar cookie.

As its crumbs fall all over the place,

I think of the egg yolk dripping

on the table.

And I hope that

wherever you are,

whatever you are doing,

something shifts, and

you feel the sweetness

somehow.

I hope you feel the

toughness of the cookie

somehow.

I hope it brings you back

to that very first day.

I hope it takes you

to the many more days

I have stored in my heart,

all mine to keep,

until we meet again.

Let’s meet again.

Soon.

I’ll save a sugar cookie

just for you.

What a sweet treat.
