Siobhan Kweiba Sam ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Name: Siobhan Kweiba Sam

Major: Economics and Sociology double major

Hometown: Accra, Ghana

Class Year: 2016

What are your postgraduate plans?: Hopefully get into graduate school to pursue an MSc in Social Policy and Development. Core concepts and debates within social policy and development including the policy process, wellbeing, poverty and exclusion, global institutions and the aid system, sustainability and livelihoods, and rights and citizenship. These are issues that I’m interested in. The Msc in Social Policy and Development also aims to develop an understanding of the theory and methodology associated with social policy and planning, with a focus on whichever area is of particular interest to the student, which for me would be the developing world, or more specifically, Africa.

What is one thing you took away from being a MHC student?: The fact that South Hadley weather is terrible! Just kidding! One thing I’m taking away from being a MHC student is perseverance and hard work. If you want to do well and keep up with your academics and extracurricular, you really have to work hard and persevere.

How do you think MHC has shaped you as a woman?: My experiences at MHC, both academic and extracurricular have helped me grow into a more confident woman. It’s interesting because that was what I was hoping for, coming to a women’s college and all. So I’m very glad. Though I’m not where I want to be in terms of confidence, I have definitely grown a whole lot, and I’m not as scared to go out into the world as I would have been a couple of years ago! Thanks MHC!

Throughout you 4 years at Moho, there have been some good times and bad, what kept you going through the hard times?: My faith in God and my lovely community of sisters. Shout out to them! They know themselves. I will miss them very much.

What is your favorite quote and why?: For my favorite quote, I would go with a quote from the Bible, I should say. It’s “For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul?” (Mark 8:36) I love it because it reminds me to keep things in perspective and not get carried away/worry about life in general.

What is your favorite dish from your culture?: Fufu and groundnut soup. It’s so delicious!

One class and/or professor you recommend?: Social Inequality with Kenneth Tucker. Take a sociology class guys!

What will you miss most about MHC?: I definitely won’t miss the weather! But what I think I’d actually miss is convocation. What I’ll miss about convocation particularly is just the whole excitement of dressing up in our class colors and coming together to literally scream and shout (in extreme heat), take pictures and just have fun before the semester begins. It’s also different because the semester hasn’t started yet and so you don’t feel guilty for hanging out and having fun as compared to other events during the semester.
