It’s Not You, Mount Holyoke, It’s Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Dear Mount Holyoke,

When we first met, I was like the rest of the freshmen at orientation: starry-eyed, terrified, and excited. Excited about the people I’d meet, the classes I’d take, the connections I’d forge. Writing this now a year and a half later, I feel that excitement all over again. New people, new classes, new connections—new college.

Yes, really. I’m transferring to another college in spring 2020. That’s next semester—we’re parting so soon, I know. I’m sorry things haven’t worked out between us. Being a girl coming from a big city, I don’t think your location is for me. But seriously, it’s not you, it’s me. I need somewhere bigger, more open, with more to explore and keep me busy and where there’s something new every day. So I’ve chosen Barnard College, located in New York City.

I’ll still think of you, just a few hours’ drive away. I’ll remember how much I loved the intricate architecture and interior of the library, late trips to Blanch to eat too many french fries, the scramble to beat the lunch rush, how beautiful the snow looked as two walls on either side of me during walks. I’ll miss my friends. I’ll miss Jorge wandering around the lake, M&Cs, getting bubble tea in Amherst, scanning the bookshelves at the Odyssey, meeting my newspaper section every Wednesday, my art professor, and late hours in the painting studio.

All of that has been amazing and I’ll reminisce about it for years. Not every memory I’ve built with you has been good, I’ll admit that. We’ve had a few arguments here and there. But I’m so glad for everything you’ve given me. I got a good college experience, learned a lot, and I’m lucky that I ended up where I did. I know you’ll continue to be amazing—sorry that I can’t stick around, and thank you for letting me be with you.

With all my love,

Caroline
