Five Women-Led Movies to Watch RN

Autumn is officially upon us and while the scenery and fall outfits are a bonus, your Google calendar is probably looking a little hectic right about now. With the holiday breaks coming up sooner than you think, hopefully relaxation is soon to be upon us. Between the family time, wrapping presents and traveling, there’s no better time to binge some pretty awesome movies.

While the classic holiday movies are always a must (I mean, is there such thing as watching Elf too many times?), there’s no reason you can’t set aside the holiday movies for a few nights and catch up on some seriously badass movies with women taking the lead. Below are movies you can stream on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

Hidden Figures

This story follows three black mathematicians working for NASA in the 1960’s. Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monaé, and Taraji P. Henson take the lead roles in this three-time Oscar-nominated film. Hidden Figures is available for streaming with an HBO account.

Thelma & Louise

This iconic BFF film made its debut in 1991 with Geena Davis and Susan Saradon in the lead. This six-time Academy Award-nominee opens the dialogue of rape culture through the heavy yet heart-warming storyline. This is an excellent pick for a girls night in, or when you want some strong female inspo on a Friday night. Thelma & Louise is available to stream on Hulu.

This is a perfect pick for when you’re in the mood for a good tear-jerker. Based on the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue, Room tells the story of a young woman and her son who are held captive by the boys father and mothers rapist. The story follows the emotions and scars of the family once they have escaped and are acclimating back into the real world. Brie Larson received an Academy Award for best actress for her outstanding performance in 2015. Watch Room on Amazon Prime.
