Let this be a reminder to call your person! Call your mom, your dad, your guardian, your grandma, your brother, your sister, your cousin, your friend, your significant other— call someone you love! I believe this is something to prioritise, and here’s why:

Honestly, college is more often than not busy, and sometimes hectic. I tend to walk around campus in a daze, with my mind set solely on the next thing I have to get done. I check off all of my boxes of commitments, but what about me? I absolutely need more than the assurance of a good grade to get by. So, when life gets into that monotonous pattern of work, I have to remind myself to call someone.

1-800-COMFORT…A call to someone from life outside of college can really be a gift. The act of telling someone about your day, someone who knows you, cares about you, and who will listen with open ears, provides real relief. Communicating with another person about my daily life makes me feel seen and loved. Like meditation, talking on the phone with someone familiar can be freeing and comforting amidst the rapid pace of it all.

I call people for many different reasons; to catch up, to talk when I’m missing them, to share some specific happenings, for advice or for company. This is an opportunity for me to feel connected to home while on campus, and I value it so much!

You might be thinking, “I really don’t need you to explain what a phone call is to me.” But I’d say that I might. In the same way that I remind myself when life seems too chaotic even for a phone call, I’ll tell you: call your whoever. Whoever you want to share with and who you wish to hear from. I’ll tell you to make time! No one should ever have to feel held back from moments like these. Despite living on your own, you are not alone.

Call them on your walk home from class or from dinner, call them when your roommate’s in the shower, schedule a call if need be. Let this be a reminder to take time for yourself to connect and communicate with those who love you. It’s so important!

If you need someone else to call, check out warmlines and peer support lines that accept calls in your location. Searching “warmlines” or “peer support lines” will result in resources as to what these certain phone lines are for and will provide numbers available for you to call.
