If you’ve read some of my past articles, you’ve probably caught on to the fact that I love expressing my adoration for my favorite TV shows. In the past, I’ve told you about my love for Friends, Jane the Virgin, 13 Reasons Why, and How I Met Your Mother. Today, however, I’m here to share some impactful quotes from my most recent favorite show, This Is Us.

If you haven’t heard about the show, or have yet to watch it (which I highly recommend you do), here’s a summary (warning, mild spoilers ahead!):

This Is Us is a comedy drama featuring the Pearsons, an American family who live in Pittsburgh. The show has flashbacks from their lives in the 1980’s and 90’s in between scenes from the present day. The Pearsons have five family members: Jack, who is married to Rebecca, and their three children Kevin, Kate, and Randall.

The pilot episode opens with Rebecca giving birth to her children in August 1980. We learn that Rebecca successfully has two of her triplets; however Kevin and Kate’s brother, Kyle, is a stillborn baby. Heartbroken from the news, Jack watches Kevin and Kate in the newborn babies room through the window. While watching them, Jack sees a third baby, a little boy, Randall, in the crib next to the twins.

Jack learns that Randall was found abandoned outside of a fire station, and was brought in to the hospital by a fireman. Jack decides that Randall is destined to be with the family, and he and Rebecca adopt him. And so Kevin, Kate, and Randall are considered triplets and Jack calls them “The Big Three.”

The rest show follows the lives of the Pearson kids, switching from their present day lives to flashbacks from their childhood. In modern day, we’re shown that Randall is married to Beth, who he met in college. Randall and Beth have two daughters named Tess and Annie.

We also learn that Kate is still struggling with her weight, as she did when she was younger, and works for her brother Kevin. However, she soon quits her job to focus on losing weight and ends up joining a weight-loss therapy group, where she meets a man named Toby who she later on dates.

The final member of the Big Three, Kevin, is the star of a sitcom titled “The Manny”, a job he’s  not too happy with because the acting and writing are awful and shallow. Kevin is currently not married and doesn’t have any kids, unlike his brother Randall.

I think this show is just brilliant. The actors are all so talented and clearly passionate about what they do and their characters are incredibly real and relatable. It’s one of those shows where you get so sucked into the storyline that it doesn’t feel fictional. My personal favorite aspect of the show is the theme of family– This Is Us does a beautiful job at showing family dynamics, showcasing the fact that all families experience high and low moments.

This Is Us contains some incredibly memorable scenes and quotes that leave quite a long-lasting impact. It’s the kind of show that makes tears prick your eyes because of the many emotional moments, but that’s what makes it such a wonderful show.

Below, I’ve collected a handful of the my favorite quotes from the show that I think really tug at your heartstrings!

 1. “I love you as much as a human heart can love.” -Jack Pearson (Season 1, Episode 6: “Career Days”)

2. “I know it feels like you have all the time in the world, but you don’t. So stop playing it cool.” -William Hill (Season 1, Episode 8: “Pilgrim Rick”)

3. “Life is full of color. And we each get to come along and we add our own color to the painting, you know? And even though it’s not very big, the painting, you sort of have to figure that it goes on forever, you know, in each direction” – Kevin Pearson (Season 1, Episode 5: “The Game Plan”)

4. “We’re twins. We’re not like regular people. When I was a kid, I broke my arm and he cried out in pain ten miles away.” – Kate Pearson (Season 2, Episode 3: “Deja Vu”)

5. “I can live without pizza and cookies and potato chips and whatever that brownie thing was that they were serving on the plane. The one thing I cannot live without is you.” -Toby Damon (Season 1, Episode 10: “Last Christmas”)

6. “There’s no lemon so sour that you can’t make something resembling lemonade.” -Dr. K (Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”)

7. “Holy crap, you’re going to freak out when you see how awesome your dad is. You’re going to be big fans.” – Rebecca Pearson (Season 1, Episode 12: “The Big Day”)

8. “If you really want to do this, if you really want to risk our perfectly imperfect life for something, let’s go all the way.” – Beth Pearson (Season 2, Episode 1: “A Father’s Advice”)

9. “That’s the first time in 36 years you said the words, ‘He’s my brother.’”- Randall Pearson (Season 1, Episode 7: “The Best Washing Machine in the World”)

I know I say this with every TV show I write about, but I can 100% guarantee you that if you give this show a chance, it will grow on you. I was a bit hesitant to start it at first, because I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it. But after I watched the first few episodes, I was hooked. It’s simply amazing and such an emotional experience. You won’t be disappointed!
