9 Empowering Songs by Little Mix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

One of my favorite musical groups in the world is the British girl band Little Mix.

Little Mix (from left to right: Leigh-Anne, Jesy, Jade, and Perrie)

To provide some background information, Little Mix formed as a group back in 2011 and won the X Factor UK competition for that year. Since then they’ve released four albums:

DNA (2012)

Salute (2013)

Get Weird (2015)

Glory Days (2016)

One reason why I love Little Mix is that they’re all about empowering young women. They express this through their songs and interviews, and I’ve always admired them for their self-confidence. I think Mount Holyoke students would absolutely adore Little Mix the same way I do, since the students here love embracing the power of women in the world.

That being said, below are ten of Little Mix’s most inspiring songs that I think will make every women who listens to them feel insanely confident!

1. “Change Your Life” (from DNA)

Most Powerful Lyrics:

You got a right to show the world

Something never seen

We wanna hear you scream it out

You’re not alone

2. “Salute” (from Salute)

Sisters we are everywhere

Warriors, your country needs you

If you’re ready ladies, better keep steady

Ready, aim, shoot

Don’t need ammunition, on a mission

And we’ll hit you with the truth

Divas, queens, we don’t need no man, salute!

3. “Little Me” (from Salute)

I’d tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,

Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,

Tell her she’s beautiful, wonderful,

Everything she doesn’t see.

4. “Clued Up” (from Get Weird)

I stay clued up and I’m ready

To love the good and live the bad

Clued up and now I get it

Just make the best of what you have

Cause sometimes it’s beauty, sometimes it’s pain

Sometimes it’s sunshine, and sometimes it’s rain

5. “Shout Out to My Ex” (from Glory Days)

Shout out to my ex, you’re really quite the man

You made my heart break and that made me who I am

Here’s to my ex, hey, look at me now, well, I

I’m all the way up, I swear you’ll never bring me down

6. “We Are Who We Are” (from DNA)

We are who we are, who we are, pretty’s just a pretty word

And I’m gonna shine like a star, cause I’m the only me in this world

Throw away the books and the magazines, I’m never gonna look like a beauty queen

We are who we are, who we are, and I’m just doing me, just doing me

And I’m just doing me, just doing me

7. “I Won’t” (from Get Weird)

I got my heart, my head up high

I will be strong, I will survive

Cause all of the hurt will wash away with the rain

And all that we’ve learned will be enough to shine again

8. “Word Up!” (for Sport Relief)

Wave your hands in the air

Like you don’t care

Glide by the people

As they start to look and stare

Do your dance

9. “Competition” (from Salute)

I say it once

You say it twice

You know I like a little competition from time to time

You think I’m wrong when I know I’m right

You lose this ain’t no kinda competition

I like a man with ambition

But when you gonna know it’s time to let go?

‘Cause I think I’m about to lose my mind

The girls have so many other amazing songs out there, but these are the most inspirational. If you loved these songs, take a listen to the rest of their album!
