An Open Letter to My Parents

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Hey, Mom and Dad,

Thank you. Thank you for always giving me so many opportunities and giving me the best childhood I could have asked for.

Thank you for working so hard to send me to what I think is the greatest school in the world. I miss you both all the time, but I want you to know that at this point in my life, I couldn’t be happier.

Mom, thank you for teaching me the value of being selfless. You put everyone before yourself. You will throw all of your wants and needs out the window, just to make sure everyone is happy. Thank you for teaching me my ABC’s and making those dots over and over again on paper so I could write my name. Thank you for teaching me how to do laundry, so I didn’t shrink all of my clothes in college. Thank you for always treating others with respect and showing me how important it is to be yourself. I think you are the most beautiful woman in the entire world, and you are my biggest role model.

Dad, thank you for teaching me the value of hard work. Even though we used to butt heads, I can see now that it was all for my own good. Thank you for making me rake leaves and haul mulch. Thank you for making me run sprints on the hottest days of the summer, and when I felt like I couldn’t run anymore, you told me to run faster. Not only did you teach me how to work hard, but that I should never put a cap on my capabilities. I have big dreams because you raised me to feel like I can be whomever and do whatever I want. Thank you for teaching me how to ride a bike and how to drive a boat and a car. Also, thank you for not yelling too much when I got in my first fender bender. But, thanks for yelling at me those few times I needed it.

One of the most important things that I thank both of you for is teaching me what true love is and the importance of family. Having two parents who see each other not just as a couple, but as best friends, is something I wish everyone could experience. You put each other before you put yourselves. You are a team. You work through all things together and never keep things from the other. Not only did you teach me what I want to find in a spouse, but you taught me how to treat others. Seeing you two do the little things for each other makes me understand that the little things truly are the big things.

I think it is safe to say that I won the parent lottery, and I want you both to know just how great of a light I see you both in.

Love,

Your Daughter

Some of my best memories here at MSU are spent with my best friends.
