More Than Just a Sister

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

If you have a sister, you’re lucky to have formed such a special bond with someone. From your best friend to your partner-in-crime, she’s more than just your sister!

1. She’s the perfect role model.

My sister has always been my role model. She’s someone I aspire to be, day-in-and-day-out. If you have an older sister, you know that she’s the one you looked up to. The oh-so-cool big sister that never failed to inspire you.

2. She’s always there to help you out.

Need a new shirt for that party Friday? Ask your sister. Need help perfecting your resume? Ask your sister. Need some serious girl time, complete with pizza and ice cream? Ask your sister. The amount of times I’ve relied on my sister are too high to count. She’s always there to help me, regardless of what I need.

3. She lets you steal from her closet.

From blazers to boots, to her cute, new H&M dress, your sister always lets you steal from her closet. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked, “That’s so cute, where’s it from?” to which I’ve had to respond with, “Thanks, it’s my sisters!”

4. She taught you how to have a little fun.

My sister is always there when I need to have a good laugh. If you have a sister, you know that she helps you not take life too seriously.

5. She introduced you to the things you now love.

My sister and I have so much in common, we’re pretty much the same person. Growing up, if my sister loved something, I was bound to hop on the bandwagon. When you want to be just like someone, you want to love all the same things as them too.

6. She covered for you.

There may have been a time or two I broke something or forgot to do something, and my sister totally had my back. If you have a sister, you know she’s always there to cover for you and help you pick up the pieces. Or secretly hide the pieces, so that your parents never find them!

7. She was the guinea pig.

If you have an older sister, you know that she helped prepare your parents for you. It’s no surprise that my sister’s curfew was 11:00 p.m.,  while mine was midnight. Your sister took all the flack first, so you got the half-hearted flack second.

8. She gives you relationship advice.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said the phrase “Boys are dumb, please help me,” to my sister, I’d probably have enough money to afford those jeans I wanted last week. She’s there for your silly, nonsensical questions about boys and always has the advice you’re looking for.

9. She gave you rides.

Since my sister is seven years older than me, she was able to drive way before I could. I felt ridiculously cool riding around town with her and her friends, listening to music that I now understand the lyrics to. If you have a big sister, you know that she can sometimes double as a chauffeur.

10. You always have someone to hang out with at family events.

Not that sitting around answering questions like, “What’s your major? Do you have a boyfriend? A job? What do you want to do after college?” isn’t fun, but family events are much better when your sister is there with you. You have someone to help you dodge all of the above questions and sneak out early to get McDonald’s with when the ham and undercooked potatoes just didn’t do it for you.

11. Her place is like a safe haven for you.

Whenever I’m sick of school, work or any of life’s little stresses, I know just where to go. My sister’s place is perfect for when I need to relax, overdose on chocolate or have quality time with my best friend. If you’re lucky enough to have a sister who lives nearby, you find yourself taking advantage of any opportunity you have to stay at her place.

12. She’s always honest with you.

If I need a little tough love, my sister is the first person I talk to. If you and your sister are close, you know she’ll always remind you when you’re overreacting or when you need to take a step back, gain some perspective and relax.

13. She’s your biggest supporter.

My sister has been there for me from my awkward elementary school days, all the way to my slowly-approaching-adulthood days. She stands up for me, gives me excellent advice and is always available (even when life gets hectic!) Having a sister means you have someone to support you,  no matter what.

14. She doesn’t judge you.

I can tell my big sister anything. No, seriously, anything. If you have a sister, you know how lucky you are to have someone who will listen to you,  without any judgment.

15. She’ll always be your best friend.

My sister is my rock. I appreciate her more than words can describe and feel so lucky to have her in my life. If you have a sister, remind her of how much she means to you!
