Campus Celeb Travels the World But Can’t Stay Away From MSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Elizabeth Jane Brumfield, or EJ for short, is the epitome of a well-travelled, cool college fashionista.  Last summer her travels around Europe opened her eyes and helped her to realize that she is destined to help others, spreading her love for history and English anywhere she can.  However, there’s more to this twin then a bubbly and fun personality .  She also has big ambitions to take over the world, and we think no one will be able to stop her!

HCMSU: You graduated from MSU in May.  What was your degree in and what made you choose to come back for two more years to pursue your teaching degree?

EB: I graduated with a degree in International Studies, Art and Humanities with a cognate in Political Science.  I always knew I wanted to teach, but originally I wanted to pursue graduate school to become a professor.  After I graduated I felt I would make more of an impact in secondary education.

HCMSU: What do you want to do with your teaching degree after you graduate again in two years?

EB: I hope that my teaching degree will lead to a job teaching high school history or English (preferably in a warm west coast location – sorry Michigan!)

HCMSU: You spent three weeks romping around Europe with your younger sister this summer.  What did you do over there and what is one of your favorite memories of your overseas vaca?

EB: My trip to Europe was one that encouraged me to pursue a teaching certificate.  We didn’t sleep for three weeks, our brains were stuffed with history and beautiful architecture, we attempted to speak German, Italian, and French to the locals, and we roamed around Western Europe with Australians, Canadians, English and New Zealanders.  My favorite memory was our first night exploring Amsterdam, we followed the local norm and biked around the small town and later our group enjoyed a Dutch meal on a boat along the canals and afterwards we witnessed the most outrageous sex show-needless to say we were all fast friends after that.

HCMSU: What countries did you visit and which was one of your overall favorites?

EB: We visited England, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, and France. My favorite places were Amsterdam and Venice.

HCMSU: You’re applying to be a tour guide this summer overseas, what made you want to do this and what countries are you focusing on working in?

EB: I hope I get it! I’m obsessed with Europe and European history and wielding the ability to lead a group through the very sights I marveled at and share with them the fantastic stories the countries contain would be a dream job.  I would love to lead travelers through all of Europe.

HCMSU: What’s your favorite part about being a student at MSU and what made you want to go here?

EB: My favorite part of being an MSU student is the massive family and community you become a part of.  I’ve traveled to the west coast, east coast, and Europe, and every time I was randomly greeted by a “Go Green!”  I wanted to go here originally because no one in my family went here and I wanted to try something new.  The campus is so beautifully welcoming, and there were so many academic pathways to choose from.  I’ve never regretted the decision.

HCMSU: What music have you been mildly obsessing over lately and are you going to any shows anytime soon that you’re excited about?

HB: Anything and everything Dubstep or Electric, I wish I could share this music with everyone. If you haven’t enjoyed a loud whomp or epic bass drop, you’re missing out. In a couple days I will be heading to Detroit to watch Deadmau5 rock out with my fellow lady Spartans:) I can’t wait!

HCMSU: One last question, what was one of the craziest/coolest things you did while you were abroad on vaca?

EB: One of the coolest things we did was visit the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany (one of Munich’s oldest breweries).  We drank German beer out of these massive mugs, ate the most delicious pork and potatoes and danced to live Bavarian music, while people in dirndl’s and lederhosen!

She loves sewing in her spare time and creating beautiful clothes for herself, friends and family. Lauren also enjoys entering her designs into fashion shows such as the Annual Apparel and Textile Design Fashion Show last spring on campus where one of her dresses was a finalist for the judges choice award.
