The 10 Phases of Growing Up at MSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Whether it’s eating a thousand cookies in the caf or slinking through the streets of East Lansing, attempting to avoid the all-knowing walk-of-shame glares from passersby, college is the freest you’ll ever be in life. The transition from an awkward freshman to a routined senior is bittersweet. These all too familiar phases of becoming a real adult at Michigan State will pull at your aging heart strings.

1. When your resume becomes more lengthy and descriptive than your diary.

2. When all underclassmen begin to look like high schoolers, and you realize that you’re officially old.

3. Dorm drinking turns into bar crawls from Rick’s to Rama to Harper’s and then back to Rick’s.

4. Your parents coming to visit is more of a nuisance than a blessing. I mean, how many different times should you actually pose for pictures with your siblings in front of Spartan Stadium or Beaumont Tower?

5. Questionable Tinder hook-ups miraculously turn into long-term relationships. You still can’t quite tell if your SO’s jokes about getting married at the MSU Wedding Chapel are serious or not. But you’ve reached that nesting phase in life, so you might as well keep them around.

6. When you return back to your off-campus home after a long day and you’re so tired and hungry that you can’t decipher which need should be fulfilled first.

7. Never wanting to check your bank account because you know you’re more than MC Hammer broke after bills and groceries.

8. When your pool of friends slowly depletes because everyone graduates and you don’t have enough time or f***s to give to make new ones.

9. When you’re pumped about getting household items for Christmas and birthdays.

10. When people ask what you’re doing after graduation and you’re like:

Caffeine lover. Animal activist. New York City dreams.
