What is “Clean Beauty” at Sephora? An Inside Look at the Clean Beauty Category

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Over the summer, Sephora created an entirely new category for all your beauty needs: “Clean Beauty.” Clean beauty is something entirely different that has changed the way consumers think when buying products and even changed the way brands think when making their products.

What actually is Clean Beauty though?

Clean Beauty is beauty products that are free of sulfates: Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) , parabens, formaldehyde, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar and the list keeps going! Basically, it’s just all the stuff you don’t want in your products that you’re putting directly on your skin. Also included in this section is any skincare, hair and makeup brands that have less than 1% of synthetic fragrances. That’s great for gals who are sensitive to heavy fragrances, like me.

Sephora even went the extra mile to ask their shoppers what they were most concerned about when buying products (i.e. cruelty free, sulfate free, organic, etc.). After figuring out what most consumers are most concerned about, they sifted through thousands of products to create this category.

Now, with all those toxins being excluded you may think that this category is quite small but, you’ll be surprised by all the products that are offered in this section. They have a section solely for clean products online and even in stores (isn’t great for everyone if you can find all these clean products in one place, right?) If you’re online, there is a “Clean Beauty” option right next to K-Beauty, it will bring to every clean beauty product in Sephora! If you happen to be in store, you can ask any of the color artists or skin specialists, where the clean beauty products are located; they also will help you with matching or recommend products for your skin type!  If you’re unsure if it’s “clean” or not, you can look for the “Clean at Sephora” label.

Here are some of my Clean Beauty faves that you can look out for when you’re shopping around:

Clean Makeup

Josie Maran: Vibrancy Argan Oil Foundation Fluid $45

This is a great clean foundation and one of my go-to’s because it is medium to full coverage, but it is infused with Argan Oil. It makes your skin look flawless and hydrates through the day while you’re on the go! It’s a clean product so you’re certain that your skin will be happy! Isn’t that amazing?

RMS Beauty: Living Luminizer $38.00

Do you want dewy skin that looks like you just got a $100 facial, but you actually just got out of bed 10 minutes ago? This luminizer will do the trick! You put a little bit on your finger and dab it on the high points of your face, then you’re all done! A little goes a long way but it will give you that perfect, dewy, celebrity skin!

Clean Skincare

Summer Fridays: Jet Lag Mask $48.00

Who doesn’t love masks? Especially ones that you put on and forget about! This mask hydrates your skin right away and it does it without all the crazy ingredients! You just put a thin layer on all over your face and leave it on! No rinsing needed. Just what you need for those long days, you can still mask without waiting around for 20-30 minutes.

Kopari: Coconut Your Selfie Kit $40.00

This kit comes with a toner, cleanser, moisturizer and even a lip balm! Say hello to your new skincare routine! Kopari is one of my favorite brands because it is clean, made with coconut and good for all skin types. Even the packaging is cute!

Go shop the Clean Beauty section! You’ll thank me when you use your next haul.
