The Unveiling of Sustainable Fashion by Vivienne Westwood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Sustainable fashion has been important within the fashion industry. Whether you’re for it or against it, the topic is fiery. One designer has shared a collection of sustainable fashion for FW21.

Vivienne Westwood, an English fashion designer and businesswoman who’s responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashion into the mix, has done it again with her sustainable fashion collection. Westwood has used 90% of sustainably sourced materials as said by TheTrendSpotter.

As silkscreened garments are a must this season, Westwood also was inspired by the Daphnis and Chloe, a 1743 painting by François Boucher.

“It became the main print for the season, with the sky and pastoral scenes reflected through the colors and fabrics,” said Westwood in the interview with TheTrendSpotter.

Viewing the collection I noticed its punky style, while also including its relatively plaid trench coats, mini dresses and velvet blazers. The materials used have reduced impact on our environment with recycled denim, organic silks and an eco-printing system.

For those who don’t know, eco-printing is a technique that uses plants, leaves and flowers. It leaves their shapes, color and marks on the fabric.

Westwood’s collection was filled with easy shapes and a familiar signature- loose fabric draped across the bust and shoulders. The male models wore plaids and snappy topcoats and suits, with to die for rose pink knits.

The pieces that stood out the most and are my favorite are the two-tone check topcoat and the oversized camel peacoat. Oversized has definitely been a trend I love to see and wear. It’s super comfortable and my favorite part about oversized outfits are the deep pockets because everyone knows women’s clothing barely has pockets.

Vivienne Westwood did an outstanding job on this Fall/Winter collection in which you can check out on her Instagram @viviennewestwood.

“We aim to make clothes which last,” said Westwood in a statement.

And that she did. Westwood made clothes that will last for an environment that will last once everyone participates in sustainable fashion!
