Tips on Making Your Dorm Room Fall Ready

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Your dorm is your second home, so you add all the essentials to make it cozy. At home during the fall you decorate to give your home that autumn feel that gets you excited for the holidays. So why not do the same for your dorm room? Although we can’t add everything we usually would from home, we can still find decorative pieces that are dorm appropriate. Find out ways to get your dorm room fall ready while still following the fire-safety rules of your resident’s hall.

Get on Pinterest

If you’re looking for decoration inspiration or some DIY tips, get on Pinterest. Looking at just a few examples will start you in the direction of what you want your dorm to look like.

We love that cozy feel so combine ideas that make your dorm room as comfortable as possible, such as a fall colored comforter. If your idea of fall is a bunch of lights then get some and place them around the room or your door. Even getting a simple pack of leaves from the dollar store and sticking them all over the wall can add an autumn touch to your dorm. The possibilities are endless, it just depends on which route you want to take.

Decorating on a Budget

We’re in college so nobody has the finances to spend their entire paycheck on dorm room interior decorations — well at least I don’t. So we need to find affordable places to shop. My personal go-to is the Dollar store; during the fall season it is filled with decorations. One of my favorite online places to shop for dorm decor is Dormify (use my Link for 20% off your purchase). You can even take the DIY route and get some supplies from your local art store.

If you’re really trying to save, take some decorations from home. Hopefully no one will notice the house is missing a few decorations —   but you didn’t hear that from me!

Safety First

As an RA (Resident Assistant) I come across a bunch of health and safety issues, majority of them regarding decorations. We want our rooms to look cute but not everything is worth you failing health and safety inspections.

Keep in mind your school’s dos and don’ts for the residence halls — you can typically find them on your school’s residence life page online. If you’re really unsure about what you can and cannot have, make sure you ask questions. Anyone in residence life staff is willing to answer you.

Avoid daisy chaining your holiday lights, simply plug them in separately. Don’t use empty wine bottles as decoration, get a mason jar instead. Moral of the story is to know the dos and don’ts and decorate safely!

Now that we’ve got all the tools we need to make a dorm fall ready, let’s get to work and do it safely!
