Taylor Swift Songs That Describe My Life Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Your resident Swiftie is back to once again talk about Taylor Swift’s uncanny ability to write about the lives of all of her listeners. Whether you like her music or not, you can’t deny she is a powerhouse that has changed the vulnerability of songwriting in pop music.

Every year of your twenties is full of defining moments. Luckily, blondie has a song to explain just about every feeling you will have during this decade of your life.

Here are the top seven Taylor Swift lyrics that describe my life right now:

  1. “We’re happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time.”

Song: “22”

No lyric can better explain the genius of Swift’s fourth studio album, “Red.” Though the album is often criticized for being sonically incohesive, I believe it perfectly explains the complexities of your emotions in your twenties. I, too, am happy, free, confused and lonely at every given moment.

  1. “I’m not cut out for all these cynical clones, these hunters with cell phones.”

Song: “The Lakes”

As I explained in my “I’m In My Folklore Era” article, “The Lakes” is about escaping from all the drama and negativity in your life. If you’re anything like me, you go through phases every few months where you just want to delete all of your social media and get rid of your phone.

  1. “The bravest thing I ever did was run.”

Song: “Better Man”

“Better Man” has been one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs ever since it was originally released by the music group Little Big Town in 2016, and it worked its way to the top of my list during the re-records last November. Last fall was the same time I considered making a major change in my life by transferring colleges, so this lyric really hit home for me.

  1. “Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?”

Song: “Peace”

Because of my anxiety, lots of things in my daily life are very complicated. I often wonder if this is too much of a burden to the people in my life. “Peace” perfectly explains how it feels to wonder if your baggage makes you unlovable (hint: it doesn’t).

  1. “Nothing safe is worth the drive.”

Song: “Treacherous”

If you’re anything like me, you love the passion Taylor conveys in her music. Lately I’ve been taking bigger risks in my life, and this line from “Treacherous” explains perfectly how I feel about them.

  1. “What would you do if I break free and leave us in ruins? Took this dagger in me and removed it? Gain the weight of you then lose it? Believe me, I could do it.

Song: “Tolerate It”

A major theme in my life lately has been understanding my worth and saying goodbye to people who don’t treat me right. I love this empowering last chorus of “Tolerate It” because it’s about gaining strength against other people’s odds and standing up for yourself when no one thought you could.

  1. “I can still see it all in my head – back and forth from New York sneaking in your bed. I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden.”

Song: “Daylight”

This song always makes me smile because it explains the past year of my life perfectly. Compared to the toxic love I’ve had in the past, the love in my life these days has been absolutely golden. And coincidentally, it’s been New York bound.

I could go on and on because Taylor conveys these universal feelings in her music that all women in their twenties can probably relate to. She knocks it out of the park with every song.

Honorable mentions:

  • “Maybe I’ve stormed out of every single room in this town, threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it’s morning now. It’s brighter now.” – “Daylight”
  • “Searching for a sound we hadn’t heard before.” – “Welcome to New York”
  • “We can follow the sparks, I’ll drive.” – “I Think He Knows”
  • “I caused no harm, mind my business. If our love died young I can’t bear witness.” – “Right Where You Left Me”
  • “Are you really gonna talk about timing in times like these?” – “Renegade”
  • “Passed down like folk songs, the love lasts so long.” – “Seven”
  • “I’m doing better than I ever was.” – “Call It What You Want”
