Styling a Fall Favorite: The Plaid Flannel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

When Fall comes to mind I envision pumpkin picking, cozy sweaters, colorful leaves and of course the timeless plaid flannel. The plaid flannel shirt is a win-win: it’s a favorite for the fall season and it’s so versatile. However, it’s easy to get stuck in the same routine over and over with flannels, which is why I’m sharing several fun and cute ways to style this staple item without feeling too repetitive.

The Classic

The easiest and most classic way to wear a plaid flannel is with a basic top and jeans. Pair your flannel with a solid color top, a graphic tee, a crop top or wear it alone. Add in some jeans (ripped or not) and boots and you’re ready to go! There are endless combinations to create with this look. It’s a total time saver and never fails.

Layer Up

Plaid flannels look great when they’re layered underneath a jacket, which is especially helpful for when it starts to get cooler out. Layer your flannel under a denim jacket for an extra cute fall look, a leather jacket for some edge, or a faux fur jacket for some coziness. Seeing the flannel peeking out from underneath a jacket screams stylish!

Tip: Make sleeve cuffs by folding the ends of your flannel sleeves over the ends of your jacket sleeves. It’s a nice touch!

Shirt n’ Skirt

If you want to dress up your plaid flannel shirt, pairing it with a skirt is a great way to do so. A denim mini-skirt always looks fabulous with a flannel, and to make it a little more sophisticated try tucking the shirt in. If you’re going for a more chic look, pair your flannel with a flowy midi or maxi skirt. Even layering your flannel under or over a skirtall is an adorable fall look!

Tie-Front

To really change up how a plaid flannel looks you can tie the front making it cropped and flattering around the waist. This can be paired with high-waisted jeans, trousers or skirts. Wide-legged, flowy or flared pants would also be a great complement to the fitted waist. This is an effortless way to make your plaid flannel look like a completely different top.

Oversized

Oversized plaid flannels are a necessity in addition to the regular flannel because it’s versatile and gives an outfit more of a comfy and effortless appearance . You can use your oversized flannel just as you would use a cardigan– wear it with a cute dress, a shirt and jeans, skirts, etc. You can also use it to create a very cozy and relaxed outfit by pairing it with leggings.
