We’ve all been there, struggling to stay awake during a really boring lecture. If you’re like me and have poor sleeping habits and low energy, it can be hard to stay awake and focused in class. Here are some tips to keep you up and at ’em for a busy day at school.
Tip #1: Morning Showers
Water can do the trick! Taking showers in the morning is a great way to wake you up. It also helps keep you fresh and clean for your first class.
Tip #2: Light Exercise
A quick walk or stretching outside will help wake your body up, giving you more energy for the day.
Tip #3 Gum or Snacks
Gum is a fun treat that will help you focus during never ending lectures. Or better yet, if your professor permits it, bring snacks to chew on. You’ll be more likely to focus without a grumbling stomach.
Tip #4 Engagement
If you find yourself dozing off in class, force yourself to participate! By engaging in class, your mind becomes active. An active mind directs your attention to the topic at hand. Hopefully you won’t feel as sleepy, and class will be over sooner than you expect.
Tip #5 Naps
A little shut eye does wonders. Take naps in between classes can help recharge your battery. However, try to keep those cat-naps tothirty minutes, and no longer than that! Any longer and you might wake up groggy and wanting to go back to sleep.
Tip #6 Heavy & Filling Meals
It’s important to maintain a healthy eating schedule. Diet is crucial to giving you energy. Make sure not to skip meals, especially breakfast and dinner. Breakfast has been called “the most important meal of the day” for a reason. It gives you the nutrients and energy to help you succeed throughout the day. Even if you have to grab a quick breakfast bar on the go, it’s better than having nothing! Don’t forget dinner either! By having a filling and nutrient filled dinner, you’re able to focus on any assignments you have that night and it helps give you a restful sleep. .
Tip #7 Avoid Sugars
By all means, avoid sugar! It may seem appetizing at the moment, but once your sugar rush fades, you will be prone to crash. Instead, try eating foods with fiber and nutrients. Replace that chocolate bar with a banana, I promise you won’t regret it later.
If all else fails, maybe what you really need is just sleep. It’s ok and necessary to take days off, especially if your body isn’t feeling well. To all of those who have wanted to sleep in class but didn’t, you’re doing great! The semester’s halfway done, just hold on tight.
