This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

There is no doubt about it – girl groups rock. These groups fought the odds to carve their place in history, inspiring millions of young women along the way. We have made a list of the top girl groups throughout the ages that we feel everyone should know about.

The Supremes (est. 1959)

Originally founded as The Primettes and as known as Diana Ross & The Supremes, this girl group from the late 50’s didn’t take off until the 1960’s. They became one of the most successful groups during the Motown era and have also gone on to be known as one of the most successful groups of all time. The Supremes set the standard and paved the way for all girl groups to come.

The Runaways (est. 1975)

One of the first all girl rock groups to hit America, The Runaways, founded by Sandy West and Joan Jett, are a group that everyone should know about. Although they did not have overly huge success in the Sates, this group still made its mark in rock and roll. They even had a biographical motion picture made about them, starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning!

The Go-Go’s (est. in 1978)

The Go-Go’s have earned their spot in music history for being one the first, and as of now the only, all girl groups to write all their own music and make it to the top of the charts. Rising to fame in the 1980’s, the Go-Go’s are a group that not only paved the way for other girl bands of the 1980’s, but for artists of all kinds – this all makes them a group to definitely look up to and get to know.

And they have their fair share of awards to prove it!

After going through multiple line-up changes, Density’s Child is known best for its trio made up of members Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Not only were they a major success as a girl group, but they have gone down as one of the most successful trios in music of all time. Little also has to be said about what the future had in store for these ladies after the group stopped performing together in 2006.

TLC (est. in 1990)

TLC made their mark in the 1990’s and early 2000’s with their hip-hop and R&B infused jams like “Creep” and “No Scrubs.” Each member had their own unique qualities that they brought to the group, and they are women that everyone should look up to for their accomplishments in music and in life.
