Save vs. Splurge: 5 Fall Makeup Trends To Try (On A College Budget!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

With the advent of Fall comes the emergence of some of the most beautiful make-up trends of the year. The beauty of the world surrounding us at this magical time inspires us to change up our looks and experiment with warm browns and golds while also adding a punch of burgundy and red every so often. It is the time of the year when the colors stun and the makeup follows suit. These are The Top Five Fall Make-Up Trends of 2014.

Nude Everything

The “Nude-All-Over” trend is one of my personal favorites because of its simple beauty. Tons of subtle and elegant looks can be created that are great for an everyday fall look that can be achieved in minutes. I think that we can all agree that sometimes it’s hard to get up and get going in the colder months, let alone do a full makeup look. With the simplicity of this trend, all you need is a nice shimmery lid, a subtle lip and you’ll be out the door in no time looking completely fab! Now when it comes to this nude trend, there is one brand that immediately comes to mind: Urban Decay and their “Naked” line. They have been dominating the “Nude” market for a couple years now with their multiple palettes, foundation and lipsticks. However, $50 on eyeshadow and $25 on lipstick is not something most college students can fit into their budget. Luckily, drugstore brands have been stepping up their nude game as of late!

My personal favorite right now is Maybelline with their “The Nudes” palette and “The Buffs” lipsticks! Their eyeshadows remarkably resemble those found in the Naked palette and their lipsticks are the perfect complement you’ll need to complete this look. The best part is that the palette is $9.99 and the lipsticks are $7.50!

Red’s and Plum’s and Burgundy’s, Oh My!

My favorite part about the Fall, besides the leaves and the cool weather, is the lipstick! Yes, as silly as it may sound I look forward to this time of the year when I can pull out my deep, dark lipsticks. The three colors that every girls needs in her arsenal are the perfect Red, a sultry Burgundy and a witchy Plum. While there are many great shades from high-end makeup brands, my top three are all drugstore!

Maybelline’s Red Revival is the perfect Blue-Based-Red that leaves you wishing it were Christmas, Revlon’s Black Cherry lipstick is THE burgundy lipstick you have been searching for, and Revlon’s Va Va Violet is the purple plum lipstick you have been dying to see if you can pull off! Again, the best part is all of these lipsticks are under $8! So go ahead and get your vamp on!

Brows That Wow

If there is one makeup trend that has come to the forefront of beauty in the last few years it is big, beautiful eyebrows. From Cara Delevigne to Lily Collins, everyone loves this look! I even have some friends that are growing out their brows. Who would have guessed it when not too long ago pencil thin eyebrows were everywhere! The one brand that has been cornering the brow market as of late is Anastasia Beverly Hills. From her powders to her pomades to her pencils, her products are the biggest things out right now. They’re also the most expensive! One of her pencils will run you $23! For a college student, that’s way too much to be spending on a pencil. But, fear not! I have the perfect product and it’s about twenty dollars less! Rimmel London’s Professional Eyebrow Pencil is an awesome pencil with a long lasting, fluid formula that is only $3.99! Now you can have those beautiful brows without feeling the pinch in your wallet!

Flawless Matte Skin

Since the 1950’s, matte skin has been a makeup trend that women across the world cannot get enough of. When Fall comes around, it seems more women gravitate toward a Matte finish as a way to switch things up from the typical “dewy” summer look. There are many foundations and powders out there claiming to be the best of the best, but Make Up Forever’s Velvet Mat foundation is really right at the top. It is a wonderful foundation that leaves a truly velvety, smooth finish to the skin. While I loved this foundation, at $36, I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much. So I continued my quest to find a cheaper yet, hopefully, similar foundation. That is when I came across the Rimmel London’s Stay Matte Foundation. I had heard great things about this foundation so I picked up a bottle to try and was stunned: it is an EXACT replica of the MUF Velvet Mat! This little guy has the same coverage and longevity as its MUF counterpart while only costing $4.99 (and yes you read that price correctly). So if you are looking to achieve that perfect matte base this fall, Rimmel is DEFINITELY the way to go!

The Elusive Kylie Jenner Lip

If you are anything like me, you have been searching high and low to find that perfect mauve color that the littlest of the Kardashian clan has been sporting lately. After poking around Tumblr for an obscene length of time, I found out that she uses two MAC products: a lip pencil in the color Whirl and a lipstick in the shade Twig. Now, I love MAC as much as the next girl, but $32 is a bit too pricey for the everyday college student. Luckily, you can keep can throw that number out the window because I have found the perfect duplicates for a fraction of the price. NYX has a couple of different shades that come close. However, I found that the perfect combination is their lip pencil in Mauve with their matte lipstick in the shade Euro Trash. Beside the fact that these products are both super long lasting, together they are only $9.50!
