My Family’s Traditional Italian Christmas Cookie Recipe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

I grew up in an Italian American family where Christmas time was never complete without these cookies. My Great-Great-Grandma Pauline started making these cookies in the early 1940s. My family treasures these cookies so much that we sell them year round in our family business, The Lyndhurst Pastry Shop.

Grandma Pauline’s Italian Knotts (This recipe makes about 100 cookies):

Cookie Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. of butter, softened (4 sticks)
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 7 cups of flour
  • 7 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt

Icing Ingredients:

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1/4 cup half and half (or whole milk)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3 cups confectioners sugar
  • sprinkles (optional)

Cookie Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • In a large bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt
  • In a separate bowl mix butter, eggs, sugar and vanilla extract
  • Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients
  • Form dough into ball shapes
  • Place on cookie sheet and bake in oven for 10 minutes

Icing Instructions:
