Let’s Talk About The Mom Shaming Kylie Jenner Receives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

It seems any time a Kardashian/Jenner posts on any social media platform, they receive a ton of backlash. From Khloe’s photoshopping fails to Kim’s body shaming, we can see how most of these opinions come from other women or judgmental men. But the one who receives the most amount of hate from mothers is Kylie Jenner.

Being the youngest of the six children, she can never post without her comments being flooded with disses. Kylie was born August 10, 1997, making her 24 years old. Despite her age, she has accomplished a lot more than I have in my 21 years. From building her own makeup brand to skincare brand to baby brand to swimwear (it’s hard to keep up with how fast she’s creating these new lines), she became a millionaire and at some point became a billionaire before she lost her title due to the fabrication of her business credentials with Forbes.

She is most famous for her on and off again relationship with rapper Travis Scott. The couple has been together since 2017 and now share two children: daughter Stormi Webster, who is four, and son Wolf Webster, who is three weeks old. Because Kylie had her daughter at such a young age (she was 21 when she gave birth), people have been criticizing her for her parenting techniques from the start.

For starters, she was shamed for having her body before and after she became a mother. All the Kardashians/Jenners are known for having work done to their bodies, but not all of the other sisters get shamed the way Kylie does. This is because of her age. Kim and Khloe do as well, but they are famous for those images. The saddest part about the negative body-shaming comments is that it comes from other women, especially mothers. Since no one knows exactly why she receives the backlash, my prediction is it’s because she is the youngest daughter of the bunch. Being exposed to older siblings who seem to be able to obtain whatever they want, whenever they want and spoil you as much as you want can give you an idealized lifestyle in your head that you might want as well. What better way than to follow in their footsteps and do what got them this so-called fame?

Another moment she was shamed for was giving her daughter a $12,000 Hermes backpack for her first day of homeschool. At the time, Stormi was two years old and people thought she was too young to be carrying a bag that’s worth so much. People flooded her comments with hate and even joked they “can’t relate” to the toddler. People also mentioned Kylie could donate that money to adults that need it. Although she might be too young to know what a Birkin backpack is, her mom can afford to get it for her.

Kylie has also faced lots of backlash for piercing Stormi’s ears at five months old. Many mothers left hateful comments about how they are disappointed in her parenting decisions, while others defended her by mentioning that it is her child and she can make whatever parenting decisions she wants to. This for sure was the most shocking to me as my mom got my ears pierced by my doctor as a newborn and has done the same for my baby sister. At this point, I realized people were just trying to find something to judge her for.

I cannot forget to mention the shaming she gets for the jewelry she buys for Stormi. She posted a picture of her at two years old wearing large gold hoop earrings with her name in the middle, and people were concerned as most gold earrings are heavy. Although Jenner never commented on the backlash, many fans have come to her defense by saying she might have gotten them hollow so they wouldn’t pull her ears. Kylie also gifted her daughter a diamond ring for Christmas when she was two years old (everything seems to be happening at that age), and she got lots of comments about how she can give that money to those who really need it. Kylie once again did not respond to the backlash, however posted a story wearing the ring with no caption. People took it as a subliminal message of her being aware of the backlash yet not caring about what they have to say.

Last but not least, People gave Kylie a hard time with her new pregnancy. After she posted her pregnancy announcement video on Instagram in September 2021, many were excited for the new couple. However, many people criticized them for their announcement being premeditated and a publicity stunt. We have all heard the saying “The devil works hard, but Kris Jenner works harder,” which is due to the fact that something is always happening in the press with the Kardashians to keep them in the tabloids. Any press is good press to the family, and they love to stir the pot whenever they can (ex. Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian dating). Many speculate she got pregnant because Cardi B had her new child and they wanted to avert the attention back to their family. However, it feels like a reach and like people will find any reason to make a Kardashian announcement seem planned.

With the amount of fame this family has, it’s no wonder why people cannot stop talking about them. They post subtle clues and tidbits of information about their lives that leave people to speculate what they might be doing next. Although their lives are plastered all over the internet, people fail to realize they are also humans who are making mistakes and learning just like the rest of us. Next time you plan on posting something negative on their social media accounts, remember you should treat others how you want to be treated and that what you put out there will eventually come back to you.
