Lady Gaga Brought the House Down At Super Bowl 51

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Yesterday’s Super Bowl 51 was, arguably, one of the greatest Super Bowls of our time, and Lady Gaga definitely contributed her fair share to that critique.

Gaga kicked off the halftime show atop of the Houston NRG stadium with hundreds of drones illuminating together to form an American Flag, where she then serenaded over a hundred million viewers with God Bless America. It was her way of sharing her refined message of inclusion and unity in what is now a deeply divided nation. Many were wondering if the LGBTQ advocate would use the stage to voice her opinion on the Trump presidency; however, Lady Gaga chose to be nothing short of elegant, fierce, and a little crazy when jumping hundreds of feet down to her stage.

Before her performance, Gaga posted to Instagram a cartoon image of herself with an NFL shirt on, dedicating the show to all her fans that have cheered her on over the years. She wanted to intensify the act by creating an atmosphere of love, diversity, compassion, and wild spirit for her fan base.

The performance was nothing less than what you’d expect from the star as she sang her biggest dance hits to get the crowd moving. Some standout moments were just that as, in one instance, she swung across the air belting her throwback anthem of self-confidence and acceptance, “Born This Way.” Following that she ran through the crowd, hugging fans while performing two of her other hits, “Telephone”, and “Just Dance.” She then made her way to a piano to sing her latest hit “Million Reasons,” where she gave a sweet shout out to her parents, before ending the show with a raucous performance of her biggest hit, “Bad Romance.”

From flashing lights, fire, backflips through the air, and an eye-popping silver sequined bodysuit, Gaga has apparently been perfecting this dream of hers for 26 years. In an interview with CBS sports before the big game, the 30-year-old singer gushed about her dream of performing at the Super Bowl:

“I’ve been planning this since I was 4, so I know exactly what I’m going to do . . . for me, it’s all about giving to the fans and bringing people together that wouldn’t normally come together.”

And she did just that.

Following Beyoncé’s 2016 performance, many thought it would be tough to beat. However, Gaga showed up on top (literally) and absolutely slayed.
