How I Turned My Crazy Retail Job into a Social Media Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been super rewarding.

Working in retail isn’t all fun and games. Aside from the fabulous perks such as discounts and free items, sales associates deal with so many tasks every day. Always serving great customer service, recovering the store, putting every item back where it came from, strong urgency during busy holidays, and dealing with Karen who is threatening to call corporate… all the while keeping a smile on their faces. Being a part of a popular fashion retail company is wild. Although I’ve grown into a great seller and stylist, I was hungry for more than just giving out fashion tips. I wanted to be excited to go to work and utilize other skills. Other than my love for fashion, styling and awesome discounts; what else is a part of me that I can bring to the table? My passion for social media.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as an employee is to always ask questions and never be afraid of rejection, be curious and outspoken at all times! I noticed how barren the store’s Instagram account looked so I asked permission to take over. My experience has grown so much ever since! I began to create different types of content such as flyers, Instagram Lives, edited photos, videography, experiment with Boomerangs, and more. Due to my constant posting and daily Instagram interactions with other stores, the (NY, NJ, Central Pennsylvania) regional manager started to take notice. I’ve had the pleasure to host regional Instagram takeovers and have my own creative initiative!

I love doing what I truly enjoy, growing my experience and expanding my resume. It’s a win-win!
