Feminism is Written in the Stars(igns): Why Men Have Such a Problem with Astrology

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Astrology has been a big topic of discussion lately, especially among women. TikTok is more popular than ever, and creators have built a platform based solely on astrological content. With published content come comments, and of course, among those comments are hate.

What intrigued me when reading hate comments on astrology-related posts, were the number of hate comments written by men.

Astrology is a female-dominated thing; many women have dedicated themselves to learning the ins and outs of it. I’m always amazed by the women on Tiktok who can guess a person’s zodiac sign just by a few traits. Plus I’m a sucker for the videos that tell you what TV show character you are based on your sign.

Now, if you don’t know what astrology is, here’s a brief explanation. Astrology includes twelve zodiac signs that are determined by a person’s birthdate. Along with typical sun signs such as Libra, Pisces, Taurus, etc. There are moon signs, rising signs and a lot more details that are all a part of a birth chart. As you can see, astrology is quite complex.

There is a lot to learn when it comes to astrology; the fact that so many women have achieved this intimidates men. Men usually know nothing about astrology so they consider it a fake female obsession. It’s easier to push women down than to accept that women are better at something than men.

There is such deep-rooted misogyny in the hatred men have for astrology, that they can’t even let women make a video about it without attacking them in the comments.

Women also experience backlash from men in real-life settings for discussing astrology. I’ve tried to discuss my passion for astrology with male friends countless times, but I’m always met with eye-rolls, “Oh God here we go again”, and the worst, “You really believe in that sh*t”. Men play fantasy football, argue over it, and dedicate many of their nights to it, but I’m an idiot for liking astrology. Makes sense.

The one positive that comes out of male hatred for astrology is women supporting women. Women have found a common love and passion for astrology and just about every girl I meet is more than happy to discuss it. It’s bonding and it’s empowering which is why women should continue to study it. Plus, it’s always fun to piss off men.

Motivating others to think deeper about issues is important to me. I think different points of view are so valuable and I love to hear other peoples ideas and opinions. I express my own ideas through creativity, HerCampus gives me the chance to channel that creativity.
