Closet Staple: Denim Jackets; Transitioning This Essential into Your Fall Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

It’s officially fall! I don’t know about you but fall is my favorite time for fashion. It’s the perfect time to start layering some of your favorite pieces to create some stylish looks. As we transition into the colder days there’s an essential piece that most of us probably have in our wardrobes that we can finally pull out and that piece is a denim jacket! I must admit I have about six denim jackets myself and they’re a staple in my fall wardrobe. I would like to share my tips on styling different types of denim jackets for those first autumn days that may be a little chillier in the morning and warmer in the afternoon.

The oversized denim jacket:

An oversized denim jacket makes any outfit seem effortless yet chic. It gives you that “I just stole my boyfriend’s jacket” look. The great thing about an oversized jacket is that you can throw it over pretty much anything and it’ll make the outfit trendier and will add a little layer of warmth. For warmer days throw the denim jacket over a dress or skirt, you can even wear it over your shoulder if it’s getting a little too toasty (like I did!). For cooler days you can layer an oversized jacket by wearing it over a hoodie or chunky sweater for extra warmth. The great thing about layering is that you can always take off the jacket if needed and still have a cute outfit on under! Even if you’re feeling lazy you can throw on a denim jacket over a hoodie and leggings to make it instantaneously stylish.

The cropped denim jacket:

This one might be my personal favorite! A cropped denim jacket can easily be DIY’ed, thrift a jacket, cut it and distress it a bit and you’re done! This clothing item can be worn in many ways and it can elevate any simple outfit. Throw it over a dress, a cropped top or a graphic t-shirt to add a little edge to the look. Cargo pants or your favorite pair of high-waisted jeans will complete the outfit.

Denim on denim:

This might not be everyone’s cup of tea but the denim on denim look is such a vibe for the fall. Everyone may choose to execute this look differently but here are some tips on how to do so effectively. You can’t go wrong by layering a white or black denim jacket with any other kind of denim. An embellished denim jacket is also great if you want to layer two tones of denim, it helps to break up the outfit if you don’t want it to look too monochromatic. For the warmer days, you can wear a denim jacket with a denim skirt or shorts and for colder days you can wear your favorite pair of jeans!

If this article didn’t convince you to pull out your denim jacket or purchase one if you don’t have one already then I don’t know what will. You can’t go wrong with having a few in your wardrobe! Don’t forget that you can also thrift one. Hope this helped give you inspiration for some of your fall outfits :)
