Cinco de Drinko — Festive Drinks for Cinco de Mayo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

I don’t know about you guys but during this spring season leading up to the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo, I have seen the pun Cinco de Drinko everywhere: On t-shirts, stickers, banners, and even reusable shopping bags. It is really taking over the witty phrase world. So what’s a better way to join in this trend than sharing a list of the best drinks to make for your Cinco de Mayo party?

Alcoholic Beverages

The Tequila Matador

It is a combination of tequila with pineapple and lime juices which makes it reminiscent of a margarita, but it’s definitely has a unique and distinctive flavor. Made with three ingredients, and served in a champagne flute it is the ideal drink for a matador who needs to celebrate a win in the ring.

Ingredients:

  • 1 and ½ ounces of tequila
  • 3 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

Recipe:

Fill a cocktail shaker with all of the ingredients and ice. Shake until chilled. Pour into a champagne flute and enjoy!

The Neato Bandito

Using blueberry liqueur, which is not commonly used at a bar counter, we can create this blueberry and lime drink. With a pinch of salt to really bring all of the flavors together, we have a bandit that will steal the place of your favorite cocktail

*Warning this drink is on the stronger side so please drink responsibly and have a designated driver if you need to get somewhere*

Ingredients:

  • 1 and ½ ounces gold tequila
  • 1-ounce blueberry liqueur
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • Blueberries (for garnish)

Recipe

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and your ingredients. Shake all of your ingredients together. Rim a martini glass with salt. Drain the mixture into the glass. Optional: Garnish with a skewer of blueberries.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

A Virgin Margarita

When you think of drinks for a Cinco De Mayo party what is the first thing that comes to mind? A margarita! This is a drink that does not need alcohol to taste good. To some people, it is even better that way. Without the tequila, you can taste the fruits and other fresh ingredients better.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 can of frozen limeade
    • 1 cup of orange juice
    • ⅔ of a cup of grapefruit juice
    • Lemon and lime slices (for garnish)
    • Bar salt (for the rim of your glass)

Recipe:

Salt the rim of your chosen glass. Gather the grapefruit juice, orange juice, limeade, and some ice. Blend until thoroughly mixed. Pour in your glass. Garnish the rim with a slice of lemon and lime.

Sangria Mocktail

This drink is great for a party because you can make an entire pitcher of it; however, it needs to be prepared at least 2 hours before you want to serve it. Sangria though, is a favorite drink among adults, so how great would it be for anyone who is unable to drink alcohol to drink alongside their adult family members?

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups black cherry grape juice
  • 1 plum
  • 1 peach
  • 2 clementines
  • 6-8 strawberries
  • 2 cups ginger ale

Recipe:

Cut the plums and peaches into quarters, and remove their pits and place them into a large pitcher. Remove the skin from the peaches and cut them in half before adding them to the pitcher as well. Remove the stems and leaves from the berries and cut them in halves before adding them to the pitcher. Fill the pitcher with enough grape juice to cover all of the fruits. Stir the contents of the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Mix with ginger ale right before serving.

So, I hope you guys are ready for Cinco de Drin—I mean Cinco de Mayo! These drinks, even the non-alcoholic ones will help you forget all of the “May the Fourth” jokes. Whether you are legal or not, Cinco de Mayo is the day to forget everything bothering you and “drink the day away.”
